Honeymoon in August- recommendations please.
On August 13th, 2005, I'm tying the knot.
On the 14th, we plan to jet away to some sandy beach. We were thinking of a caribbean destination. This morning, my brother's wife's aunt, a retired travel agent, told us that we would be going at the peak of the rainy season and we should reconsider. Does anyone have personal expereince to share? Websites do confirm that the rainy season is generally from June-September, but I don't know how rainy that actually is. I'm cold-climate born and raised, so I could see myself apprecaiting slightly cooler temperatures and an afternoon rainshower to cool things off. However, I don't want to be stuck in a hotel because of a seven day downpour. Further, can anyone recommend another part of the world? We have discussed hawaii, although it looks like it may be too expensive. Just somewhere warm with a beach. Although I think another eight months of recovery should be suffcient, my fiancee has vetoed Thailand and SE Asia. Thanks. |

Hurricane Season in the Carribbean is generally from July - September (I think) This past year, was a tough year for hurricanes, but you might get lucky.
The Caymans, should have recovered but who knows what next year will bring. Australia is a beautiful destination... though August, it's their winter... so parking on the beach might not be an option... (Cairns might stay hot year round though) San Diego is beautiful, a little touristy, but the weather is superb. I'd probably suggest Napa, the wine country in California, it's not ocean front, but there are a lot of beautiful small inns, with superb restaurants, and spectacular views.

My husband and i went to Kauai, one of the smaller hawaiian islands this past november on our yearly vacation . . . it has some cheaper, but still very nice places to stay, it's fairly reasonable there compared to other islands we looked at . . . We LOVED it there . . . it's laid back, very safe and a beautiful and an amazing place to visit . . . it's called the honeymooner's island because it is such a scenic and romantic island . . . We spoke to some locals when we were there . . . and they confirmed that the weather always stays between 75-85 degrees and doesn't get too hot in the summer . . . plus, the don't have the issues with hurricanes that they have in the Caribbean . . . in addition, we had friends who went to the Caribbean and had some major issues with pick pockets and crime . . . so, if you are set on any of the Caribbean islands . . . educate yourself on how to stay safe and protect your things. . . We loved Kauai so much, that we are planning on returning again this summer . . . just my two cents . . . Hope you have the honeymoon of your dreams! sweetpea ![]()

Whatever you do, avoid New Orleans. August makes it a sauna. *grins*
I am not fond of heat and humidity, a statement belied by the fact that I live in South Louisiana.... The islands were horribly hot and sticky in late April when we went, and Puerto Rico was equally sweltering. I can only imagine that August is worse, since I live in a semi-tropical climate, and those places are full tropical. Me personally, I'd opt for Australia, or something slightly more north than the Carribbean... There are beautiful resorts in Mexico that I'd love to visit. Congratulations.... and have a wonderful marriage and honeymoon.

I agree with sweetpea. Kauai is amazing. My wife and I went there for our Honeymoon. Luckily my parents have been involved in timeshares for a long time and we were able to trade in some of their weeks for a couple weeks in Kauai. It is such a beautiful place. I cannot really give you any advice on where else to go, but if the funds make if feasible, I would definitely suggest Kauai.

Kauai is beautiful, but Maui is as well, and has more options in lodgings. Should be easier to find cheaper places to stay, lots of condos etc. Snorkling is better on Maui in my experience. Kauai is less busy, but I've always been able to find quiet out of the way beaches on Maui too. Wherever you go, have fun!

getting there will ramp the cost up a grand or so, but if you can swing it i recommend the greek islands. we went to santorini, mykonos & crete. the beaches are awesome and once you get there it's dirt cheap.
