Is it possible...

Me and my buddy were wondering, and this is just complete curiosity...

Is it possible to get/maintain and erection while running...or is it not because of the fact that blood is going so many other places. Disregard the fact that it would probably hurt to have an erection while running, just wondering if it's possible.

I saw it in a 100m sprint race once on television. The friction of the body-suit gave him an erection or something and being so tight and all, there was no way of hiding it. It was fucking huge regardless.

I think it can happen on a short distance run. I mean I would not want to run a marathon with an erection. Not my idea of fun. I think if I were erect and running, all of my blood and energy would go to my penis and I would lose focus, trip and fall. OUCH!! That would be a very painful concrete burn.

ids say anything is possible but youd have to really concentrate (if youre one of those people)

Like previously said, in a sprint maybe yes, in a long event no. I spent a lot of years as an endurance athlete. In my experience, blood flow to ALL extremities is reduced in order to regulate temperature in the body's core. Not only was getting hard an impossibility during a run, it would take a couple of hours before I could function. My two cents, which are actually worth about a cent and a half.

actually, blood flow is <b>increased</b> to the extremities when exercising. the only place blood flow stays almost exactly the same is to the brain. arms, legs and tissue near the skin gets an increased amount... extremities, especially the exercising extremities gets the increase so they can have the blood (oxygen and nutrient delivery, waste removal) for exercise and it goes near the surface for temperature regulation. deep tissues like the digestive system get a huge decrease since those are not needed during exercise, they basically slow down to a crawl.

My previous answer states "in my experience...". I stick by my comments. Regardless of the weather, I always ended a long run with numbed hands, feet, arms, legs, and pecker. I understand the mechanics of Harry's answer, however my experience tells me there is more going on than described by him.

i don't doubt that you did experience that. but the mechanics i mentioned is the main way the body deals with heat dissipation during exercise. it uses blood as a medium to transfer excess heat buildup in the core towards the skin where the skin, via conduction, radiation, and (blanking on third main mechanism of heat transfer from skin to environment), transfers the heat out of the body (this is one of the reasons you sweat). if all of the blood stayed at the core you'd overheat and die from it. and when exercising, you're body doesn't need to make use of the digestive tract so there's no need to shunt blood to it. when you run, you're not using your arms in a manner that requires lots of blood flow, so that is shunted away from the arms to some extent. the heart, head, and exercising muscles get the most blood flow.

if you're interested, when i get home from vacation i'll send you a link to the ex. phys. book i used in class, it's pretty good. just send me a pm and i'll make sure i do it.


oh, and for the initial question, i've never experienced a hard on while exercising, i've usually found that a good way to get rid of one... but i don't see why it would be impossible. at least to get a chubby.

Here comes Mars with the math!

The average male penis when erect is approximately 6 inches long and (I'm guesstimating) about 1 inch in diameter. So that's 6 cubic inches, assuming a constant diameter along the entire length (which obviously isn't true). There are approximately 16 millilitres in a cubic inch, so the entire penis, were it a constant diameter and completely hollow so that the entire internal volume were filled with blood, would contain approximately 96 millilitres of blood.

The average adult male human body contains approximately 5 litres of blood, which means that 96 millilitres is about 1/50th of the amount of blood in your entire system. Even during vigorous exercise, I'm quite certain that the body could spare that much without great difficulty and that's using a very high number (I would make a rough estimate at the actual amount of blood in the penis during an erection being half that, maybe less). To put in in context, they take a pint of blood when you donate, which is roughly equal to half a litre. So even if we use our ridiculously high number it's still only a fifth of what you donate, which a lot of people can give without suffering any real negative consequences.

So is it possible? Physically, yeah it is. If that's where your hindbrain is going to go, then that's where it's going to go. But let's take brain chemistry into account. When you run, your brain releases endorphins and adrenaline, which leads to the so-called 'runner's high'. It also activates the fight-or-flight mechanism, which has several physiological side effects. As has been noted, your digestive tract nearly shuts down, as do many other parts of your body in order to conserve the much-needed oxygen for the bits that are crucial to your survival - namely your brain, your heart and your leg muscles. Given that, sex is more or less pushed out of your head. Your instinctive brain says 'survive now, fuck later.'

So, yeah. Is it possible to get an erection while running? Certainly it is. Is it possible to get aroused? I'm going to say probably not.
