Biggest Loser
Did anyone catch the episode of the Biggest Loser last night? It's on NBC. I can't believe we have a show on television that shows people fighting for $250,000 to lose weight!! It makes me want to put on an extra 80-100 pounds and get on the show. How do you audition for a show like that? "I'm 100 pounds overweight, eat nothing but cake and fried foods and I want to be crowned "The Biggest Loser." All joking aside, I think it is great to see people losing weight and feeling good about themselves. The thing that stands out to me is that this show proves to so many people out there that they can lose weight if they want to. It also shows that some people take longer to do it than others. For example, Maurice. He was over 400 when the show began is just broke the 400 mark on last night's episode. The other thing that was interesting is that most of the women who got under 200 stated, "this is the first time I have been under 200 in over 2, 3 or more years." I just don't understand that train of thought. If I get 10-20 pounds overweight I start changing my eating habits and get my butt in the gym!!

In theory it is so easy, in practice, a lot of people obviously find it hard - because there are a lot of people who are overweight who wish they werent. Any sensible person knows if you burn off more calories than you consume you will lose weight, but knowing and mere will is not always enough, food can be pyschologically addictive as anything else can be.
I would agree that this show could very well be exploitative though. Im 5 9 (or 5 10 iuf I realkly stand up tall) and about 280 lbs. I really want to lose weight, I understand that the equation involved is a relatively simple one... but its hard, and its so easy to get demoralised and feel like shit and just give up everytime you try. If this show can help these people not give up, and maybe inspire a few others, on the whole its a good thing. if it just makes overweight people appear clownlinke and foolish, I would say it is a bad thing.

Agree with above. Unfortunately, the equation of less in than burned off does not take into account genetic factors and the body's defense mechanisms against losing weight(slowing metabolism) which was great when our ancestors foraged for food, but counterproductive when we have all the food we need.
The exploitive nature of these shows unfortunately paints these people as the outliers rather than part of the normal population. Too many people who should sympathize with them and also try to lose weight are just laughing at them... just my $.02...

I think its a great show. ive never seen it, but just the concept. if it takes a tv show and 250,000 to finally make these people realize that they need to do something about their weight, so be it!! whatever it takes. They need motivation and im very glad that tv can provide that for them.
