Vegetarians

Any other vegetarians out there who can relate their health stories/problems/dilemmas? I've been a vegetarian for 15 years and am currently trying to lose weight. I am also still trying to get more iron. I occasionally take a slowFE (iron supplement), but I'm still worried about anemia.
(BTW, dont suggest fish/chicken, etc...they aren't vegetables )

I eat vegetarians, and haven't had a problem losing wieght. Just eat less of them or exercise more. It also can be a function of how you cook them. Even the thinner ones can be tasty, you just have to be carefull not to cook them too long as they don't have that insulating layer of fat to keep the meat nice and juicy.

3 cheers for the other, other white meat!

Thanks for the helpful response, Irishsean...I'm surprised you get a chance to eat with all the drinking you must do.

I've been ovo-lacto for almost 4 years, and in the last year or so I also decided to lose some weight. Through a combination of cutting down on my portions and being more careful with fat and calories I've been able to lose around 75 pounds in less than a year.

As for iron, I really don't take any supplements for it. I tend to get most of the nutrients I need through my diet.

And I fully agree with the annoyance of people constantly suggesting fish and chicken. It took me months to make my family understand that chicken IS indeed a meat!

Yeah, as the guy above me says, it'd help to know what your diet consists of. With vegetarianism, the less processed the food, the better. If you were eating a lot of pasta or potatoes, for example, or white rice, I'd suggest switching to brown rice or some other whole grain. They have more vitamin and takes longer for the body to break down, which makes it easier for your body to maintain a steady blood sugar level and thus reduces hunger.

I am not a vegetarian, but my wife is, and I eat vegetarian a lot of the time because that's what's on the table and I tend to eat what's put in front of me. She is heavy and has a sedentary job, but has lately been taking off weight by walking more, having the first meal of the day be the big one, and by having the later meals be lighter (consisting mainly of a good soup, or yogurt with fruit (mainly apples) and nuts, or just fruit). She's removed most of the processed carbs and fat from her diet.

I highly recommended apples as a snack when losing weight. Had a friend who went on a dietician supervised diet that was pretty severe and restricted, except that they told him he could have apples (or steamed veggies, which he hates) whenever he wanted them, in whatever quantity. He followed the diet and ate a ton of apples on the side, and he still dropped a lot of weight. Now I'm eating apples for my late-night snacks instead of commercial snacks or ice cream or sweets, and I've dropped a couple of pounds.

75 pounds? Wow, congrats. I've lost 40 already and would like to lose another 40 (ideally). As for what I eat...I tend to be lazy about preparing dinner so I get into the habit of store bought processed stuff rather than fresh fruits and veggies.

I'll do the apple advise too. I found these great little fuji apples than are great for snacks.
