i want to gain
i know this is going to sound stupid, maybe, but i really want to gain some more weight. i'm a 5'10 male, about 160, lean side and would like to gain some pounds in the form of muscles etc. what do you guys recommend as the best most healthiest way to gain some weight? i'm going to start a workout program as well such as weightlifting. it seems, though, that i've been stuck at my current weight for a long time due to my metabolism. i can eat anything and not gain weight. any suggestions?

I have no magic bullet, but one thing that works for some guys is to, for a while, cut out or cut down on all exercise except the weight training. Long term this isn't a great idea, but short-term give your body as little excuse to burn calories as possible, so that they're available for muscle building.

Just go to the gym and lift. You don't need any supplements right off the bat, just lots of effort and hard work. You should definitely notice some gains at the beginning if you haven't been working out. And don't dive right in on the first day, take it slow, otherwise your muscles will be outstandingly sore and will take longer to rebuild since they haven't been active. So start off slow and build up from there. And don't start by lifting everyday, I'd say no more than 3 times a week, if that.

don't take suppliments!
eat lots of carbs. do heavy heavy weights at the gym, aim for 4-6 reps max and really heavy so that after the last one you couldn't do another. bulking up is hard for most people though so don't expect too much. i have the opposite problem, bulk too easy, and given the sports i train for need weight to be at a minimum it is not ideal. but hey you just have to make do with the body shape that you have.

All of the above but use a good whey protein powder as well for that extra bit of protein in your diet.
I'd suggest trawling through all the old posts in H&F for more advice, as well as paying a visit to ol' faithful, www.bodybuilding.com |

Don't use a "weight gainer". 99 percent of them are A) overpriced and B) full of sugar. Just use a good whey protein powder for post workout, and EAT EAT EAT the rest of the time.
If you really are, as you say, a hard-gainer, then have 6 big meals every day. If you have a fast metabolism, don't worry about gaining fat at first, just make sure to eat a lot of tuna/chicken/rice/bread/pasta/everything. Like someone said, cut down on exersize other then weight lifting...also, the thing about "staying where you are" was a dumb comment, no offence. The "bmi" scale is a terrible terrible thing that has been proven to be stupid and worthless countless times. The fact that it doesn't factor in fat vs muscle just scrapes the surface as to why its a brutal scale.

Lots of protein, lots of lifting. However, there's a catch, when you exercise you increase your metabolism, you burn more cals, not just during your exercise period, but even afterwards. Therefore, make sure you take in enough protein, I'd sugest starting at 4000 Cals a day total (including food...) for starters then titrating up or down. Give it about 3 wks to a month before you change as it may take a while to notice.

As mentioned before, you DO need to eat alot more than you are doing now, but still make sure that you are eating well or you'll just be gaining fat which will be unhealthy now and may cause problems for you in the future. Clean meats and proteins and ideal.

Its all about the diet
Some things work for different people but I have been lifing for about 8 years now and Diet is the main thing that people over look. For someone with a high metabolizm heavey Protien loading is a must. You should be eating 6-8 times a day, small meals. If you think you are eating enough protien, then eat more. Drink LOTS of water. Hit the gym up to 6 days lifting with different muscle groups each day i.e. back and bi's chest, and tris, shoulders and abs., ect. only do cardio 3 days a week to maintain the metabolizm you have. You will find that if you stick to it, the mass will come.
