Bloody Noses
My daughter seems to get bloody noses very easily. I do think I will speak to her Dr about it but not immediately since we do seem to be able to stop the bleeding before it's too much out of hand.
I am wondering though if this is something anyone else has had trouble with. My brother got bloody noses easily as a kid and eventually had to have the inside of his nose cauterized or something to prevent it from bleeding so easily. I was in college by the time he got the work done and don't really know what was done. He still has some trouble with bleeding but not quite as bad. My daughter's bloody noses pop up as easily as his did. They aren't caused by a blow to the nose or even a bump, they aren't caused by her picking it either, at least when I've seen them start. Just 3 days ago she had one and once again today (though I think today it was caused by a cold she seems to be getting). The one that happened 3 days ago was out of the blue. I was sitting there folding clothes in the livingroom, she was sitting and playing with her Barbie dolls. She was sniffing her nose and I looked up to see if she needed a Kleenex. It was then I saw blood oozing from her nose and she hadn't even noticed yet. I guess it just felt like a runny nose at that point. I grabbed a Kleenex and gave it to her, telling her what was happening. She took the Kleenex, looked at the blood and promptly held it to her nose. The speed of the flow seemed to increase then though I wouldn't let her blow or rub her nose. We went through a load of Kleenex before it finally slowed down after about 5 or 6 minutes I think. She gets them a lot while she's sleeping too and I have to wash her sheets and pillow cases and even get a new pillow as it gets stained with it through the case and cover. I know they helped my brother's bleeding but if I remember right they had to wait until he was older. What can they do for a 4 yr old?? What can I do to help prevent them?? I am aware of saline sprays and how they seem to help keep things more moist. The situation with my brother (which is genetic as it was this was for my Grandpa too), as I understand it is that the blood vessels are located a little to close to the surface so break and bleed easier. Any thoughts, suggestions, or even questions that I should ask her Dr when I bring this up??

I hope i can help.
I used to get them all the time as a kid and still get them a couple of times a month. The usual scenario is that the blood vessels in the nose are too close to the surface. So if your daughter has a cold, sneezes too hard, maybe gets too hot etc she gets a bleeding nose. Ive had mine cauterized twice. By doing this the doctor burns the area and makes scar tissue which is really thick, and therefore wont bleed as easily. The treatment stings a bit, but is well worth it. Ive known kids who just grow out of it, without needing the treatment. When she gets a bleeding nose make sure she applies pressure to the nostril and is cool and comfortable. I usually sit on the bathroom floor where the cool tiles are. Make sure she leaves the clot that forms in her nose for at least 20mins. Kids love to blow this out. Monitor her aswell. I had a really bad one when i was about 11 where i actually passed out from too much blood loss, lucky my old man was home. After she has one make sure she takes it easy, and give her something to drink. I find that the danger times are summer and spring and when i have a cold/flu. You should bring it up with the doctor, and at least get him to have a look up there. Im not sure if theyd do the treatment on 4yrolds but wouldnt be surprised. If she has only had a few though i wouldnt be too worried (Cleaning pillows is a bitch though). |

I used to get them all the time as a kid. Slight bumps, picking, any kind of agitation would cause it. I remember going to the ENT doctor and found out that I had some kind of loose vein, or some kind of vein problem. The doctor did someting (don't think it was cauterized, but it was a WHILE ago), and I haven't been as bad since. I still get them occassionally (im now 21), when the weather changes, but its not bad at all. Them seem to be slowing down as I get older.
Sorry to be so light on the details, if you really want to know more I can ask my parents exactly what the ENT did. |

Sorry to post again but I just thought of something.
One thing I do remember very well, because I used to get so many nosebleeds, was that the best way to stop it from bleeding is to hold a tissue up to the nose and pinch the nose. Don't pinch at the nostrals, but just above them and just below where the bone gets harder. My parents would have me do this for 1-2 minutes when I would get a nosebleed and it would help a lot. Like you said, definitely do not blow or rub the nose. |

You should ask your Doc about something called Von willebrand's disease. It's an inherited coagulation disorder. It's most commonly picked up in women that have very heavy periods but nosebleeds are another manifestation. It may run in your family. Easily treatable once diagnosed.

Thanks all of you. I did contact her Dr about it and she suggested being sure not to allow caffenated beverages as they affect the blood pressure and in turn affect the capillaries in the noes. Also She suggested avoiding Pseudophed unless absolutely necessary because it drys out the sinus membranes and makes them more brittle. I should also use a saline spray during dryer months and especially if I've given my daughter pseudophed for any reason. Also swabbing the inside of her nose with a Q-tip with vasoline or babyoil will help the membranes not dry out as much. For now she believes it best to leave things be.
