Godfather-ing
I'm pretty sure this should go here, not in religion or parenting, but my appologies is it shouldn't.
I just found out that I will be the godfather to my cousin's daughter. We are all Roman Catholic, but I've never had to do this, and unfortuanely I can't really ask anyone around me for advice because they either haven't done it or disagree with the whole concept (my family has a rift with part being RC and the other being Anti-RC but not protestant, if you can understand this) Anyway, I would like to get her a gift, but am unsure of what is appropriate and am looking for suggestions. I am looking at a pendant or something similar with a Saint's Medallion or pendant, I just need to brush up on my saints to pick one. If anyone could offer suggestions for gifts ro saints, as well as gie some advice on what I'm supposed to do other than help her grow religiously, though I'm not sure how. Thanks |

St. Christopher is nice. Patron saint of travellers.
As far as I know, the only real job of a Godparent is to be present at the baptism and read a few lines out of the liturgy. After that, Godfathering is what you make it. I don't even know who my godparents are, but I know I probably have some. My mom could tell me, I'm sure... And I have friends whose godparents are like another set of parents to them. |

I'm a godmom 3 times (beats being a real mom) for the religious medals, I'd go with the kids name - Godparents gotta remember birthdays and other holidays and get to send all the good to my godchild cards.
Growing religiously? One godchild I did stand up for for his Confirmation. Papal Blessings are a nice - I also do savings bonds...

Just remember not to do favors on your daughter's wedding day to those families who do not stay in touch with you the rest of the time.

My niece, who I am godmother to...I gave a charm bracelet too -- (she couldnt wear it til she was a little older, but it had two charms on it... One was a crucifix that had the date of the christening on it... the other was a heart that was engraved with her name, Ta gra agam ort (which means I Love You in Gaelic)
(I replaced the bracelet when she turned 10 and those two charms went with it... (plus it's been easy gifts for her for special occassions.) The other crucifix I gave just had the date of the christening on it... (Remember they're pretty small ![]()

Index of Saints
practically every day has a patron saint day -- check her birthdate and see if the one you like matches up or share something of yourself with her - if you live for the internet -- something to do with Saint Isidore of Seville who's the patron saint of computers and the internet. Basically almost all hobbies have a patron saint - pick yours ![]()
