Spiders keeping me awake
The name sums it up pretty well. It all started when I started staying up until 4:00am in the morning. During this time I always thought I was imagining something scurrying through my room. I wasn't imagining it. There was a big freaking ass spider which I killed. Just before writting this post it was 1:50am and I chucked out a whopper of a spider out the window again. This seems to be happening everynight. I cant sleep. Im afraid to sleep. I dont want to sleep if they are around me. I dont know where the heck they come from why they are in my room and or why they are so f ing big. Does anyone know how to get rid of spiders that may be hidding throughout the room? Any help appreciated.

Fumigation is your only hope.
Even that's no good, though. I just read a shocking thing: no human being on this planet is more than three feet away from a spider right now. |
You may want to lay off the lsd for awile.

Spiders do get rid of other critters so don't be so quick to get rid of them - unless they are the poisonous variety
Boric Acid, which is a non poisonous powder you can put all around the baseboards and under appliances is great for getting rid of roaches and other bugs, if those bugs are gone, then the spiders should go with them Keep the place as clean as possible - spiders eat dustmites -which are attracted by bugs Read the book Charlotte'sWeb by EB White-- Spiders are your friend |
OMG, this is happening to me because of my messy disgusting sister (who I share a room with). Anyway, my boyfriend suggested I get a bug bomb. You just have to buy it, set it off, and stay out of the house for about 12 hours.

Well I started off my vacuuming my entire room. I Removed food, washed everything that I could and lastly I duct taped anything that looked suspicious.

as maleficent said, spiders are your friends. They just look creepy. They feed off other insects, such as mosquitoes, roaches, wasps and other nasty ass vermin. If you have a lot of spiders, they your room has plenty of spider "prey", so to speak. The spiders will take care of that. So doon't kill them: catch them in a glass, slide a postcard underneath, pick 'em up, and toss 'em out the window.
Most people have an unnatural aversion to spiders. And we're talking your average garden-variety spider, not fist sized tarantulas or black widows (those creep *me* out too!). I think the aversion is misplaced. Look at Spiderman: he's all good. There's no Roachman, Mosquitoman or Waspman. |

How big is big? Was it a camel spider?
|
I have found that those super-sonic pest repellent things you plug into the wall work against those things fairly well. I've noticed maybe a slightly audible click from those things, but it's barely noticible.
|
Get a cat. They catch more than just mice.

All this talk of spiders, not only has my spidey senses tingling - -and let me tell you -- it's fun --but I've got an earworm... and I blame you...
Sing along wiht me -- share my pain.... There was an old lady who swallowed a fly. I dunno why she swallowed that fly, Perhaps she'll die. There was an old lady who swallowed a spider, That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly. But I dunno why she swallowed that fly - Perhaps she'll die. There was an old lady who swallowed a bird; How absurd, to swallow a bird! She swallowed the bird to catch the spider That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly. But I dunno why she swallowed that fly - Perhaps she'll die There was an old lady who swallowed a cat. Imagine that, she swallowed a cat. She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ... She swallowed the bird to catch the spider That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly. But I dunno why she swallowed that fly Perhaps she'll die There was an old lady who swallowed a dog. What a hog! To swallow a dog! She swallowed the dog to catch the cat. She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ... She swallowed the bird to catch the spider That wriggled and jiggled and wiggled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly. But I dunno why she swallowed that fly Perhaps she'll die. There was an old lady who swallowed a goat. Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat! She swallowed the goat to catch the dog ... There was an old lady who swallowed a horse - She's dead, of course. |
Spiders are good. They may be a little creepy but I'd rather 1 spider then 1000 roaches or ants any day.
|
First, destroy every spider web you can find; look closely in the corners and ceilings, even for the slightest little string of silk. Keep an eye out in the future, and destroy every new one that comes along. If you destroy a spider's webs, it generally moves on.
Second, some spiders are more than capable of climbing into your house through an open window, even one with a screen: If the screen frame doesn't fit snugly against the window frame all the way around (and many don't, especially metal ones) spiders can and will find a way to squeeze through. So keep your windows shut, if you can, and see if that helps. I speak from experience on this particular matter. |
Well I was freaked out because the spiders I saw were an inch to an inch and a half in size. I have now duct taped my windows. People are looking at me strange.

http://www.esb.utexas.edu/philjs/ste...ges/Rabida.jpg I used to have a problem with these things. I couldn't swat them because they'd leave a stain on the carpet, and catching them was tough because they're quick and can see you coming from far away. I also had a problem with ants. When I got rid of the ants, the spiders disappeared. |
I dont think they are wolf spiders. After taking another look at the dead spider I have in my bathtub it does not look like a wolf spider. The spider is big 1"-1 1/2
but most of it is the legs. Very very long legs and quite small body. |
they may be daddy long legs. extremely long legs and hardly the body to match sounds like thats it. we have a ton of those at my place and while im freaked out by them, believe me they are harmless to humans. theres a pic here:
http://www.museums.org.za/bio/spiderweb/pholicid.htm and an article here: http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mdaddy.html hope that helps and try not to worry too much :P |
My arachnophobia has become worse after reading this thread and of course I had to take a look at those links....
|
did you know that hummingbirds make their nests from spider webs (not that you want hummingbirds in your room). also daddy long legs are poisonous but their mouths are so small that they can't bite us.
|
Daddy long legs are not poisonous. I dont think the spider I saw was a daddy long legs. The legs were a little thicker. I live in the pacific northwest if that helps.
|
Actually anitra its a myth that daddy long legs have a deadly poison but just can't bite humans, if you read costellos first link it says this. It's true they can't bite us, but the venom also wouldn't do much too us even if they could bite.
|
They did the daddy long legs test on Myth Busters. The guy collected lots of them, put them in a container and inserted his arm. They were halmless, except one, that bit him towards the end of the experiment. So they can bite.
Edit, it was Episode 13 Episode 13: Buried in Concrete, Daddy-Longlegs, Jet Taxi Jamie and Adam make a brave attempt to solve a legendary mafia mystery by searching for the decomposed body of Jimmy Hoffa, allegedly buried in the concrete under Giants Stadium. Will they meet the same fate as Geraldo Rivera at the tomb of Al Capone? The mythbusters then fire up a jet engine and find out if the power and force of a 737 could launch a taxicab 75 feet in the air. Finally, will Adam's arachnophobia prevent him from finding out if the daddy-longlegs is the most venomous spider? Brave indeed. |
When it comes to houses with spiders in them... you must show no mercy. Do not release them outside, they will merely come back into the nice warm house again. They must be smashed. I recommend a large textbook, preferable a physics or chemistry book to liquidate them.
|
I use a dirty sock. Or anything that I can throw well.
|
Other then a photo, identifying these critters will be nearly impossible. I am beyond thankful that the spiders I get outdoors, dont get indoors. Our orb-weaver spider things we get here are beyond nasty looking, and thier looks can kill.
I hate spiders of any size. |
For all that is holy and good, KILL ALL OF THE SPIDERS YOU COME ACROSS. I haven't read this part in awhile, but I'm pretty sure the Bible says somewhere "Yea, shalt though smoosh all spinderkind thou seeest, shalt though be blessed in Heaven and exalted above thine fellows." I have nightmares about these things. I have been around tarantulas, and they almost make me catatonic. I can't even try to kill them, I'm too afraid that they'll live.
Get a bug bomb. Fumigate, Smoosh. Stomp. Do what you have to do, but do not live with them. |
just a quick little factoid that is probably going to keep you up for the rest of your life:
The average person swallows three spiders while they sleep every year. Have fun! And this is true. |
Thank you mage. Thank you so very much for that factoid. Im sleeping better already.
|
You are so very welcome. I love being able to help other people out.

In southwest Ohio, we have these "fruits" that grow on trees that my parents always called hedge-apples. I have no idea if that's what they're actually called. Anyway, they're green, round, about the size of two fists combined and have a rough textured surface. You put a few of these hedge-apples in your house and the spiders will disappear. Something to do with the spiders eating the fruit and getting poisoned, I guess. It worked like a charm at my house. They last for a few months before they start to rot and you have to throw them out.
by the way, Snopes said the whole "avg person swallows "x" amt of spiders" thing is B.S. |
Good news everybody. I captured one of the freaking suns of bishes. I got him locked away in a plastic baggie. Im trying to find out how to upload the pics. After searching the internet I think the critter in my hand is a funnel web spider.
|
We have a spider problem. Ours we know are poisonous, Brown Recluse Spiders. I have been bit twice, my husband once, our daughter once.
I would catch one and save it in a jar for identification purposes. If it's not a poisonous one, I wouldn't be too razzed about it. Helpful spiders are a good thing. Sticky traps work well, especially if they are crawling across the floors like you mentioned. If you find out that your spider is not harmful, then many of your fears should be put to rest. I know I have a hard time falling asleep every night too, and it was just Wednesday night that I found a brown recluse in my bed! I'm in the Midwest, and they are really bad here. Anyway, best of luck to you. I feel for ya! |
Hmmm... a friend of mine had a similar problem. Turns out that she'd stay awake, spider hunting, for fear that there was a spider around every corner. Apparently it was one of the signs of her OCD (obsessive/compulsive disorder). She's been on a new medication to help with the OCD, and the need to spider hunt went away with it.
|
Hopefully I'm not crazy or anything. Im pretty convinced the critters crawling are funnel spiders, while big aren't poisonous so I dont have to worry too much.
|
Aren't funnel spiders poisonous?
I have a spider problem in the basement. It doesn't matter how many times I try to exterminate the little bastards they just keep coming back. CONSTANT VIGILIANCE! Quote:
Incredibly disgusting. :o |
