Whey vs. Soy protein
Most of the info out there talks about using Whey for protein supplements... Was wondering if Soy falls way short of whey and totally sucks, or if its pretty close... or what.
thanks |
falls way short
|
to ask a stoopid question - presumably one is plant and the other animal protein? is that why?
|
Whey absorbs much faster into ones muscles. Ive read alot about the benefits of whey, and afew of the downfalls of soy. Soy is still probably good, especially for vegetarians.

Whey protein, being an animal (dairy) protein, contains several essential amino acids that your body cannot produce/create on it's own. We need these proteins to build muscle. If you take just soy protien, it's like eating peanut butter- you'll get plenty of protein, just not the right kind for your body.

Whey > Soy, thats not to say that soy should not be in your diet but whey is best post workout, due to the fact that it is the quickest digesting protein and can leave the stomach/be processed faster.
There have been many studies on soy and to say its terrible is dumb, it is a complete protein and all studies done on it are in obscene doses of soy scaled to bodyweight. As long as soy is a small part of your diet it is a good part of your diet but, soy if consumed in large quantities has been shown to raise estrogen levels (were talking like 100 G + a day), and also have some negative effects on some body functions. In small quantities (25G<), I have never read of any side effects from soy and have never had any issues with it either (my little tortillas have soy^^) Personally, use all kinds of protein and to much of one type of protein is generally bad (except egg whites and chicken cause I'de be screwed :P), so mix it up casein, soy, whey, egg, lean meats - They all have their benefits and some have more downfalls then others but thats not to say that they don't have room in your diet. As long as their complete proteins I really wouldn't be to concerned. |
Be careful with soy-- it has at least 15 allergenic proteins that could be deadly, in extreme reactions. I found that out the hard way :o

Whey > Soy
'nuff said, buy the whey |
Isn't there some sort of link between soy and growing man-boobs? I heard something about estrogen content

Soy in extreme doses (>150g a day) can make men more aggressive, and lead to social problems (ie being reclusive). A little soy in your diet is good, but if you are looking for protein suppliment I would definatly go with Whey.

Latest issue of Muscle and Fitness confirms some studies that too much soy leads to aggressive behavior in lab rats, article also points out some newly discovered benefits of whey protein.

Why not use both? Its actually most beneficial to have a variety of different proteins in your diet. This product has them stacked at different digestive plateaus creating a time released effect. In turn your nitrogen retention is stretched out over time. Which makes an excellent drink right before bed (no carbs before bed; but a protein that will keep your nitrogen level going while you sleep. I have yet to see an report that soy causes gynecomastia. If someone has a substantial link; please post it. I think the thing that some either forget or don’t know is that while estrogen can have adverse effects in males in excessive doses; its beneficial to have it as high as possible. It’s the amount of estrogen that will determine how much testosterone reception there will be. Soy also creates a molecule in the intestines called equol which helps support the prostate. http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:_...+for+men&hl=en http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:_...+for+men&hl=en |
I'd say use both. The more variety the better. But whey is much superior for energy use--that is, if you want to USE the protein (such as for a shake that you plan on using for a 90-minute workout) then use the whey, but if you want to eat it for weight, heart, or other dietary health concerns, then soy is a good choice.

You are what you eat,
from your head down to your feet. "schoolhouse rock" Are you an animal or a vegetable? Of course, you are an omnivore. However, the body gets its best mix of aminos from meat sources (and dairy). These always contain a complete spectrum of aminos, and the proportions are better as well. This is not to say that soy is bad. But for instance, if your budget is tight, go for the best bang for the buck: whey. |
My wife got on soy because of the menopausal benefits. Apparently it helps with hot flashes, etc.

Whey is whey better. Soy, not soy good. I get it.

on the topic of whey...i take 20-40g of whey a day becuase i lift a decent amount. ive had average acne for...well ever, and despite my diet change and washing my face constanly i cant get rid of acne. im 22 btw. so my question...does anyone know of any sort of connection between whey and acne?
|
I eat over 200g of protein every day, 100g at the least from whey. I have litte acne, and what I do have I'd sooner blame on dirty skin (I work in the oil patch) and poor sleeping patterns (poor sleep has always made me break out).
This much protein is asinine though, if you don't work out a lot. |

According to Men's Health (http://www.menshealth.com/cda/articl...0-1307,00.html), while soy has some health benifits such as reduction in prostrate cancer and cholesterol levels in blood, soy phytoestrogens mimic normal estrogen and contain pharmacologically active molecules. These drugs have a negative effect on mental ability when ingested in large amounts. Keep your soy intake under 25 g per day.
Whey has all the health benifits of soy - redutction in prostrate cancer, lower cholesterol - and doesn't have any of it's side effects. |
