Taking This Job Or Wait It Out?
Hey Everyone,
Here is the situation. I have been two job interviews last week that are located in Toronto and both full-time positions are something that I am interested in working at. I am confident that one or both of them will turn out well since I met with each employer for about an hour whereas they have met other candidates for just 10-15 minutes. One employer has stated the result will given this week whereas the other employer has already invited me for a second interview for next week. The problem is the fact I have been offered a job that pay less but something I want to enter as a career (hospitality and tourism industry). The job offer is only good for today 27th and tomorrow 28th. Should I just wait it out and hope something will work out in Toronto or do I just take the job out west in Alberta. Taking the jump to Alberta will incur a bit of startup cost (airline tickets, transportation, and others) Thanks, Aric |
If the job in Alberta is something you really want to do, and it's a good opportunity for you, not just a job, then accept the position, in the meantime, if either of the two positions come in, then explain to Alberta that another offer came along and you are respectfully declining their offer.
Don't go to Alberta just for a job, go because the opportunity for growth and such are there. Don't stay in Toronto because they are paying slightly more money. It's a decision about where you see your career going.... and what you really want to do... |
I think you should take the job in Alberta. It's something you want to go into, and you already know you have the job. Sure you'll have sacrifices but in the long run you'll be better for it.
Where abouts in Alberta will you be? Have you visited out there yet? |
I'm a bit confused as to which one is which and where, but nevertheless, I would accept the offer in Alberta. (bird in the hand) I would give some stipulations of actually moving so that you can pad some time in to find out what's happening with this other job.
I would keep the iron going for the other job and see how it pans out, and then when the offer truly comes to fruition I would then make the choice at that time because both offers are real and legitimate. |
Will the job in Alberta offer some sort of relocation incentives or help? (alot of organizations do this)
|
No relocation incentives as far as I know. The cost would be around $500 Canadian for airline(one way)/transportation/etc.
As for the Toronto employer #2 that offered the second interview, he just called now inviting me for a second interview tomorrow with his manager. Should I just call Toronto employer #1 and ask what the current situation is rather than wait it out for a few more days. The job in Alberta would be close to the Rocky Mountains. |
It wouldn't hurt to call them.
Alberta? Close to the Rockies? Dude, I'd SO be there! :D |
Based on what they'd be paying you in Alberta - can you live on that salary? have you started to look for places to live.. .etc.
What connections do you have in Toronto that you wouldn't want to leave... There is nothing stopping you from accepting the job and then turning it down later... |
Room and board plus meals will be provided for a nominal monthly fee (less than a day's salary) so I can certainly live on the salary they would be providing.
Other than friends and family, not much. |
So what makes the Toronto position more appealing?
|
I'm a cynic. Accept the Alberta job; stall them for a couple of weeks if at all possible. In the meantime, follow up with the other jobs. If one comes through in the meantime and you really want it, tell the Alberta people that things have changed, and sorry. It's a little cold, but only the moral equivalent of corporations who keep you on the string for months for a job they'd love to give you "as soon as the money comes through."
|
Ask for an extension on the first job offer. That's a common thing to do...but not TWO WEEKS. Just a couple of days. Other than that the best time to look for a job is when you already have one.
