Favorite Protein/Energy Bars

I was introduced to Clif Bars a little while ago, and must say that this form of nutritional supplements has taken a huge leap forward since I took my first bite of a Power Bar 12 years ago.

Anybody else have favorites? Clifs and me get along really well. I can noticeably feel more physically and mentally alert, energized, and not hungry.

Luna bars are good as well.

I've never tried them myself, but I've heard that Ostrim (ostrich meat bars; http://www.protos-inc.com/) are "surprisingly edible"

The regular power bars are nasty.... HOWEVER last week i tried their new protein bars and they were pretty good. I liked the cookies n' cream flavor especially.

I like Detour bars. They taste a lot like O'Henry bars. I'm also partial to Mesotech's Cookies and Cream bar.

Balance bars are the best imo. The smores ones, chocolate peanut butter ones and chocolate chocolate are good. It's all about knowing the right flavor.

I think Luna bars are okay too. Some Zone bars are good.
Like I said, it's all about what flavor you pick up.

I like the original Power Bars. Oatmeal is probably my favorite flavor. Other brands I've had are tasty too, but most of the time I stick with Power Bars.

The Clif bars taste like candy bars to me, they're so tasty, I can't imagine they're actually good for you There's a peanut butter/chocolate one thats yummy.

I usually keep a supply of Luna Bars in my suitcase and desk for when I miss lunch or dinner -- the Key Lime/Lemon/Peanut butter ones are good. and there's supposedly something extra in there for women too - some extra vitamins or something.

Power bars I can't get past the texture on..

Somewhat off topic, but is it bad to have a protien bar 3 times a day? I just bought a box of nitro tech marshmellow swirls protein bars, they suck. Next time I need to test one before I buy a box

there should be no adverse effects to eating a power bar more than 3 times a day.
Although real food is much better for you.

I don't know if we have Cliff bars here in Canada. I haven't heard of them.
I have seen the Detour ones though and want to try them out.
I try to keep the bars to a meal replacement or an extra boost when I am missing a meal.

Most taste horrible.

My two favorite are:
Balance Bar Gold: Caramel Nut Blast
Luna Bar: Lemon (yeah i know it's for women, and lemon is a weird flavor for a power bar type thing, but the taste is really good- i almost like it better than eating a candy bar.

You have to be careful with protein bars, depending on what your are using them for;

1. If you are using them as a meal replacement then that's fine as most of them, including Power Bars, have a pretty high content of carbs and a decent amount of calories. For this purpose I choose "Premier Protein: bars. They have;
244 cals
30 grms protein
8 grms fat
21 grms of carbs

2. If you are using them as a high protein snack then you need something that has a decent amount of protein and low in everything else. For this I use "Kinetix". They have a lower protein content but they are considerable lower in calories. They have;
150 cals
15 grms protein
4 grms fat
18 grms of carbs

I also use a protein power immediately after weight training. This by far the best to build muscle but is less convenient than bars. I use "Prostar Whey Protein" which has;
114 cals
23 grms protein
1.5 grms fat
2 grms of carbs

In terms of calories and fat, some protein bars prett much *are* candy bars...I'd be wary of just munching away at them because they're sold at the local health-food store..

Click on bar for nutritional info. Not as good statwise as powerbars, but I think they taste a hell of a lot better and Walmart sells 'em for less than a buck.
49 Grams of Carbs but only 13 grams of protien, doesnt seem like a good balance.

Kashi Good Friends cereal is awesome too - But get the Cinnamin Raisin kind, otherwise it feels/tastes like eating rabbit food.

I dont use bars (too hard to eat on a bike), but I do use energy gels. Usually Hammer Gel, its cheap. And the stuff works pretty well-about ten minutes after I eat one, I go from being trashed to feeling pretty good again. Makes you thirsty though--make sure you eat them with water. And watch out--some manufacturers like to put *lots* of caffeine in them.
