Playful dog defuses shooting spree plans
For those of you on this board who belittle the relationship between animals and humans... you know who you are... read this.
LINK Playful dog defuses shooting spree plans Last Updated Thu, 24 Jun 2004 11:34:46 TORONTO - A man from New Brunswick who called off a shooting spree after a chance encounter with a friendly dog is to appear in court in Toronto on Thursday to face several weapons charges. The 43-year-old man, who turned himself into police on Wednesday afternoon, said he'd loaded his car with guns and ammunition in New Brunswick before setting out with plans of randomly shooting people in Toronto. Some of the weapons seized by police On arriving in east-end Toronto, the man reportedly went into a nearby park to load his weapons. There, he told police, a playful dog approached him. That encounter apparently changed his mind. He got back in his car and began looking for police. At about 5 p.m., he spotted a cruiser and turned himself in to the surprised officer. Police said the man was carrying a loaded semi-automatic handgun when he approached the officer. A search of the suspect's car turned up two rifles with scopes, a shotgun, a revolver, an air rifle, a machete, a hunting knife, a throwing knife, a camouflage mask and netting, and 6,296 rounds of ammunition. The man reportedly told police that he planned the killing spree in order to get himself imprisoned for life. He was taken into custody on several weapons charges, including carrying a concealed weapon, possession of ammunition for a dangerous purpose, careless storage of a firearm and unauthorized presence of a firearm in a motor vehicle. Um...oooookay.
I'm having a hard time following his logic, but I'm glad the dog convinced (?) him to change his plans. In a mostly unrelated vein, there was a kid in my high school who was kind of picked on. His family was poor, he wasn't too bright, didn't have a lot of friends, etc. We had to write an essay for English class, and he wrote one on why he loves animals and the teacher had him read it to us - he said he loves animals because they love you no matter what you're wearing, and they're never mean to you because you're different. It still makes me well up a little to think about that poor kid and how lonely he must have been. I think about calling him up sometimes and seeing what he's doing and apologizing on behalf of the entire class. I don't think I was ever mean to him, but I definitely ignored his existence for the most part. Anyhow, animals definitely provide something for people. That's why my Cooper is a therapy dog now.

The upside is that we have friendly dogs in Toronto... I just found out that he was picked up in an area very close to my home.

Well, it's impossible to see his logic when there's just "A) I'm Wanna go to Prison, B) I've got plans to shoot people up, C) This dog is playful with me, therefor I'll turn myself in and go to prison anyway!"
The article doesn't mention *why* he wanted life imprisonment. Could be that a mean dog killed his cat, and since they don't allow pets in prison... |

An interesting story. Maybe the cute poochy made him realize that there's more to life than prison?? I dunno... hope he adopts a cute puppy and gives it a good life.

The news on the radio is that he came to Toronto for a killing spree... When he met the happy dog he thought that if there are happy dogs there must be good people so he decided not to kill...
The only thing I can think is that many Canadians living outside of Toronto feel that Toronto is the centre of all evil (a lot like many American feel about NYC or LA)... I suppose he came her to kill because killing evil people isn't such a bad thing. The dog apparently changed his mind. In the end... the guy is nuts...

Why not go to prison for life? You have free food, a good job punching license plates, and all the free sex you want as long as you don't mind being someone's boy toy. Sounds like a good proposition to me.
Other than that, the guy was obviously whacked!

Wonder what the punishment is? I hope they just get him some treatment and don't actually imprison him. Afterall, he turned himself in without really doing anything.

What a wacko that guy..
too bad they didn't go into any further details about the dog, I'd spend an extra 30 seconds reading it, it'll sure make the story more interesting.

If I was going to get myself imprisioned for life, I'd come up with a more creative way of doing it. Something you've never heard of somebody doing. Something fucked up.
I wonder if somebody just walked up to a prison and said they wanted to move in and be treated as a prisoner? Would they allow them? Or kick them out? What if a convicted prisoner served his sentance, but liked it there and wanted to stay. Would they allow it? |
