Skin Care Products for Dudes
 

You know on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy when they hook a brotha up in the bathroom with new skin care products? That's what I'm looking for. Cleansers, conditioners, moisturizers, etc. What line of products do you use and where do you get it? I'm 30 and not getting any younger. Plus i shave my head so i need something to keep the dome healthy too. ;)

I just discovered that Mary Kay has developed a line of skin care products for men.

Then you could always use the cleansers and moisterizers off the shelf at the department store. Just because they're marketed for women doesn't mean men can't use them.

I think Avon has some skin care products for men too.

neutragena In the shower I use their body soap. Then I use their razor defense facial scrup. Then I use their oil-free face wash (the orange stuff that looks like pump soap). Then I use their razor defense shaving gel. Then I shave.

Yeah, I'm a girl and Neutrogena totally works for me. It has got to work for guys too. :)

Suave has a line for men. I think Neutrogena has some mens products as well.

One of my friends has more products than myself an most girls I know COMBINED! But he does have great skin and hair and such, so I guess it works...

I use Arbonne products. They do not test on animals and they don't use animal byproducts. They have great skin care products for men and for women. Send me a PM if you'd like to know more.

I find Jack Black products to be the best, especially the shaving cream.

I use suave body wash, and St Ives apricot scrub. Works really well for removing dead skin.

Kiehls has an excellent men's line, and it's fragrance free, so it's better for your skin. Also, Clinque has a very good mens line, I've been using their regular line for years, and swear by it.

Body Shop has a good facial mosturizer that is not greasy and also a good eye cream.

Yeah, Queer Eye got to me as well. A combination of that, a whitehead, and a well-timed advertisement got me started last week with the new Gillette Complete skincare line. It is unscented, and the gel is non-soap based, which I really like. We'll see if it does anything.

Just shop around and find a line that works. I'd been using Shiseido since I was like 12, cause that's what my mom used and I just grabbed it from her bathroom and started using it.

Worked like a charm for years, then I caught a few QEFTSG episodes, and thought I might try a "men's" skincare line. I tried a few recommended by sales people at Nordstrom's and Neimen's. I was oily as hell and broke out like a damn teenager in puberty.

Needless to say I nixed the new stuff and went back to the tried and true Shiseido. Although I had to get that oil and breakouts under control so I moved from using the "skincare" line to the "pureness" line and in a matter of 2 weeks I got my face back to normal.

BTW, I'm mexican, and a greasy one at that, as stereotypical as that is. My face is crazy oily by midmorning. If anyone else has this problem as well, I highly suggest the oil control blotting papers from Sheseido, they work like a charm.

Another thing; I don't know where you are from, but if you have CVS pharmacies in your area, try stuff you find there; they have a very liberal return policy: So, try a bunch of stuff and see what you like. I'd expect that this stuff would be considered "cosmetics", but you might want to make sure.

That's the combo I use too. I live to use the scrub right after I shave (I normally shave in the shower). It leaves my face fealing grrrrrrrreat!

I've had good results from using Clinique's M moisturizer (it's the women's moisturizer, but repackaged so that men don't get as self concious), as well as their face cleansing bar and 7 day scrub.

For shaving products, I'm currently using Art of Shaving's unscented Pre-shave oil, Shaving Cream (the real stuff, not aerosol), and Aftershave Balm.

This has worked incredibly well for me.

I've heard a lot of good things about Baxters of California, Kiehl's, and Origins as well, though I've never personally tried any of them.

What does it have on a wash cloth and bar of soap? I can almost make myself bleed with a washcloth.

You don't need a separate line of stuff for men... all that's different is manly packaging.

Basically, you need a good cleanser and a water-based moisturizer. My favourites are by L'Oreal - I use Hydrafresh cleanser and moisturizer and they feel amazing. Were my girlfriend's stuff until I tried them ;)

Check out the pharmacy and see what you like... plus if you're single, you can ask the cute pharmacy employee to help you out ;)

I was thinking about getting that. What do you think of it so far? Worth a buy or should i look into some other brands?

AOS, pretty much kicks ass in the shaving products dept. My beard is notoriously known for giving me ingrowns and bumps, the hairs are thick, curly, and grow in no particular direction (got some growing up/down, left/right, right/left, circular directions) it's a fuckin pain in the ass.

The AOS products keep all that down to a minimum. Also I started exfoliating my beard area with the LaMer Refining Facial before I shave and all signs of ingrowns, bumps, or anything have literally disappeared.

Yeah, I was in the same boat as you (thick, curly hairs that grow in every direction) and AoS is the only thing I've found that really helps.

Plus, the mild aroma of the Unscented Pre-Shave Oil (yeah, it's got a little aroma, but it's unscented...the scent disappears as soon as you shave), it VERY soothing and makes the experience truly wonderful. Doubly wonderful if you get a shave from one of their trained professionals.

As far as the men's skincare goes, has anyone found something to down-play shiny skin? I have a problem with my forehead perspiring in the summer, and my usual routine doesn't help. I mean, I look fresh and clean when I leave in the morning, but by the time I get to class, I'm drenched. (btw, it's not so much "oily" as wet...although it does get slightly oily)

Also, miko, there's an article on www.askmen.com that deals with "Men's Cosmetics" and they discuss a lot of the common brands of skincare products (although they also discuss more make-up like things such as concealer and such as well). It might be a good place to find some new brands and a little insight.

In some cases (such as with the Clinique moisturizer) this is true. However, some men's lines were specifically formulated to either be less irritating, have a "manlier" scent, or (ideally) designed with a man's thicker, usually rougher, skin in mind. This is especially important with some products, since the constant irritation of shaving necessitates a slightly different formulation for men to truly reap the benefits of skincare.

"The Body Shop" has some really great products for men. My b/f seems to really enjoy them.

Depends on the bar of soap. If you use a good mosterizer (sp?) I'm sure it's nearly the same. I tend to prefer the St. Ives though.

After reading this thread yesterday I went out and bought the entire line of Neutrogena for Men. I have to say, even with a old crappy disposible razor, this stuff gives me an incredibally smoothe and close shave. My skin loos and feel healthyer after only useing it for a few days.

I would deffiently reccomend this stuff.

BTW, they have this little bar of soap that's wrapped in a washcloth like material. It's rather expensive at $2.99 a bar, but I really feel like it's worth it. Sure beets that female "poof" thing I used to have to use because I have sensitive skin.
