Question about taking Protein

I've been drinking protein shakes after my regular lifting sessions for the past while. I've started doing aerobic workouts on tuesdays and thursdays (I lift monday wednesday and friday) and was wondering if I should be taking protein after Aerobic workouts or not?

Thanks for the help

If you are looking to gain lean muscle mass or bulk up, its important that you maintain a high protien intake everyday. I have heard between .7-2 grams per your body weight every day. But again, it depends on your goals.

I can't hurt...

I have also heard to maintain a high protien intake everday and that your body can only absorb 48 grams a protien a day, so anything over that is going to waste....literally

48 grams per day only? Or did you mean per meal?

Where did you find this info?

I've been wondering about that. I've read elsewhere on TFP that you should have 1 gram per pound you weigh and day. So, if I'm lifting a pretty good bit and I'm trying to gain muscle, I would take 180 grams a day. Others have also said that you can only process 30 grams per meal. Anyone know if that's the truth and where they got the info?

I've heard the 30g per meal thing too, but I don't think there's truth to it, and definitely not the 48g per day. I go by the gram per pound BW, and drink protein every night (Your muscles are constantly rebuilding, so it makes sense to me..)

Think of it this way, people. Can a 100 lb person process as much food as a 220 lb football player? Probably not. So why should they be limited to 30 grams of protein at a time? It makes no sense, but it is one of those "facts" passed around the internet all of the time.
Also, your stomach works by mixing acid in the stomach, then releasing small amounts of the mix into the top of the small intestine. The body then releases acid neutralizers into the mix and starts moving it down the line. Only when the ph is at the correct point is more food released from the stomach to the small intestine.
See, the body is not stupid. It has been handling this for a long time. If you eat too little, then you are hungry. Ifyou eat too much at one time, then you feel lousy. Pay attention to the signals your body is giving you, and then temper that with some science.

Thats what I heard but I did not want to supply possibly false info so I checked on webmd and this is what they said, "Ideally, you should consume 0.36 grams of protein for every pound of body weight, according to recommended daily allowances (RDA) set by the Food and Nutrition Board. So if you weigh 170 pounds, you need about 61 grams of protein each day.

Protein should also make up approximately 15% of your total daily caloric intake, also according to the RDA. In a diet of 1,800 calories a day, for example, about 270 of those calories should come from protein."

AND

" diet in which protein makes up more than 30% of your caloric intake causes a buildup of toxic ketones. So-called ketogenic diets can thrust your kidneys into overdrive in order to flush these ketones from your body. As your kidneys rid your body of these toxic ketones, you can lose a significant amount of water, which puts you at risk of dehydration, particularly if you exercise heavily."

Taking protien after a workout will allow your body to take that protien and burn it as a fuel. Now if you are trying to loose weight I would not advise taking protien because your body will burn the protien that you are taking insted of the fat that you are trying to rid yourself of. If you are just trying to stay in shape, go for it, protien is something that the body needs and taking it after a workout or cardio training will be something that your body can use.

My understanding is that protein is needed to repair and rebuild muscle tissue and is therefore taken after a workout when your muscles are doing this at their peak. Burning fuel mostly happens during the exercise itself and these fuel sources might include any available carbs or fat sources on hand. You have to be careful here to make sure that you are not exercising to the extreme point where your body starts to use muscle stores as it's energy source.

Keep im mind, the RDA's are mostly for overweight 40 year olds who sit on their ass all day. .36 grams of protein per pound of weight for people who do any kind of exercise at all won't cut it.

sorry, but this is incorrect. you're body doesn't use protein as an energy source until blood suger has been nearly depleted. marathon runners have to worry about it. normal exercisers do not. protein is only a primary source of energy when starving, because your body wants to save fat to use to maintain life long term.
