India is a vast place - a sub-continent. Why don't you get a guide book or two, and then if you have specific questions, we'd try and help. The key determining facors should be when (time of the year) how much you have budgeted and how flexible you are in terms of accomodations and culinary and dietric restrictions.

Been there a couple of times, the greatest piece of advise I can give to you is to NEVER drink water from the tap, boil it like crazy unless you want to be sitting on the toilet for the duration of your stay.

I used to live in New Delhi and did some travelling while I was there.
First of all, the water in Delhi isn't so bad. The only thing you may get is a stomach virus that we used to call Delhi Belly. It's kind of like an initiation into India; you'll probably get it. It doesn't last long though.
I wish I could be more specific with locations, but I don't remember exactly where things are. In Rajasthan, you can go to forts and the Blue City. Down in Agra of course there is the Taj Mahal. In Jodhpur and Jaisalmeer there are more forts, which are interesting, but I would also recommend going to a bird sanctuary. There's a fairly large one in Jaisalmeer, I believe, which has about a zillion different types of birds, not to mention some tigers that you might see early in the morning if you go at the right time.
In Delhi itself, there are a couple markets you may want to hit, seeing as they're both interesting and cultural hubs. There's Sarojini, Dilli Haat, and Janpath, those are the biggies. Old Delhi is a little rundown, but has some more historic stuff than you'll find in New Delhi.
I'll come back if I think of more stuff.
