Anyone ever done Habitat for Humanity?

I was thinking about lending a helping hand at some charity, for both personal and charitable reasons, but this struck me as particularly important. I'm very skilled in the area.

Has anyone ever done any work with Habitat? What's it like? Of course... I ask first online and then I google for the official site and information.

My sister has done this with her youth group at church. She helped build 4 houses (I think) in a poor neighborhood in Charleston,SC. At 17 years old, she said that that might be one of the most rewarding experiences in her life. She also takes food to the homeless in her community and helps elderly persons grocery shop.

My parents have no idea where I went wrong.

I work for Habitat for Humanity. I help run a store called "The Habitat Restore" where we take in donations of building/house goods and recycle them and sell them to the public at a reduced price and all proceeds go to the Habitat For Humanity charity.

Unfortunately I was so busy at the store I was unable to participate in the home building last year and hoping that I will be able to participate in the 8 homes we are building in this area this August.

But it's an amazing experience. A lot of the families come into the store and volunteer their time and I have met so many awesome people that have been helped by this Charity. When the houses are complete you can stand there and see that you helped to create something that is so important to the people you are helping.

I've donated. I've also donated to a similar charity org. called Higher Ground for Humanity, run by Jewel and mother Lenedra.

Habitat is made up of local organizations, all of which have their own vibe. As far as I can tell, they're all good people, but some of them reach out to the community for help, and others are a little more inward-looking.

For example, a lot of HforH chapters will train you and put you on a project; you'll do good and learnn something at the same time, which is totally satisfying. My local chapter, however, is is fairly small and is made up of a bunch of older men who are extremely competent with tools but not interested in teaching or organizing big teams of volunteers; they just wanna hammer and saw. So if you show up at the site to volunteer and you don't have many building skills, all they'll do is give you a broom and tell you to go sweep the site. So most people who aren't skilled, don't feel welcome. Their big fundraiser for the year is a golf tourney, if that gives you an idea of where they're at. I know a guy who's on the local HFH board, and keep nagging him about it -- _I_ would like to help, but I'm tool-illiterate, and I'm not going out there just to sweep -- and he chuckles and admits that they've got their heads up their asses, especially because a lot of their long-time volunteers are dying off. But nothing changes.

I certainly am not putting down Habitat, all the chapters do good work. But some chapters are more outward-looking than others. Still, if you've already got the skills you'll probably be welcome no matter what the chapter is like.

I worked a couple of times building a house for habitat through the college. It was insane how fast it all went up(We did a porch in about an hour). Weirded me out though cause I had basically no experience and i was up on the top of frames nailing the roof together.still its a pretty rewarding experience.

My mother was a Director of the local Habit group a couple of years ago before she moved to another state. She moved back about a year ago and has started to get back involved.

I volunteered at their booth at a local fair but haven't contributed my time to actually working on a house as yet. The house they just built (this is their second in my county) was being done at a time where I just couldn't participate.

I'm sure I will put in some more hours in the future. Overall it's a good organization and I'm more than happy to contribute to helping them in my community.

Its something I have always wanted to do. I think I am going to try to get some of my fraternity brothers together to go volunteer for one.

Yep. I've slung a hammer a few times, and provided lunch to the crew once or twice. It's a good outfit.

I spent my spring break last year working at a HforH site in Florida. It was a nice trade off, I paid $200 for travel, lodging, and food for the week, got some delicious Florida sun, stretched the muscles, and built a house. Better than sitting on my ass in Ohio, thats for sure.

It was a really wonderful experience and the people were incredible. I learned TONS on my trip. I would definitely do it again.

it was a while ago, and it wasn't a sanctioned HforH build, but it was the same idea. we drove down into redidential tijuana and camped out on a big flat abandoned mining area, and every day for a week we drove into a neighborhood and built a house. we had no power out there, so the whole deal from the foundation up to the framing, spackeling, and roofing was done by hand. great experience, moving a single mother and her five kids out of a broken garden shed and into something more civilised. i'd definitely get involved if you have the opputunity.
