Bed and Breakfast

Any of you stay in B&Bs? I forget just how much nicer they are than staying in the corporate faceless hotels.

I just stayed at the Coffey House B&B in Port Charlotte, FL. I also have stayed at the Adamstown Inn in Adamstown, PA.

I recommend both of them highly.

Love B&Bs. The only catch is, you aren't anonymous. In order to enjoy a stay in one, you should get to know the inkeeper, and you will probably be seated with other guests over breakfast. So, if you are antisocial, stay in your Motel 6.

I'll give a shout-out to the Maple Leaf Inn just north of Woodstock, VT.

actually one time we did have breakfast with another couple.. they registered in the guest book as Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The way that they talked and chatted, it was very apparent they were not married to each other.

We stayed in this incredible B&B in Bar Harbor, Maine. When we arrived we were told that our room wasn't ready yet, but would we consider this other room in a seperate building directly behind the main house for the same price. We were a bit leery, but ok'd it just the same. WOW!!! This room was about $100.00 more/night and quite obvious why. No hotel room we've ever stayed in could equal that room. The food was great, and the people at breakfast gave us really good sightseeing tips. B&B's are definately the way to go.

Soon as I can dig up the name, I'll give this place a shout out.

Before my parents bought a house up in the Adirondacks, we used to go up there every vacation we had and stay at a little B&B. I almost always feel uncomfortable at most of them, and it's not because I'm antisocial or want to be anonymous, but there's a feeling of guilt I get when I'm staying at somebody's house, especially when they're cooking me breakfast. Once I become familiar with them, I feel like I should be getting up to do the dishes or something. Not that I'm a disrespectful guest, but suddenly I feel like I have to be on my "bestest behavior" and I wind up not feeling as free as I would if I were at just a hotel. They definitely have more charm and character to them, though - no doubt about it.

We stayed in a B&B type-place last year in Kauai (I say "type" because we weren't served breakfast, but it was someone's inn), and that was pretty much okay, but I still felt weird having sex in the hot-tub when I knew the owner lived upstairs. That's my point.

Plus, I don't like breakfast as a meal.

I'll probably feel differently when I'm older.

I've stayed at a very nice B&B and I would have preferred to stay at a hotel.

The people are nice but you are kind of obligated to show up for breakfast, regardless of what you've done the night before, and there's a curfew! After all, you don't want to wake the other guests when walking in...

not at all. in fact some hosts, will even leave you breakfast at your door in the morning we initially declined breakfast and our last lady just left us some stuff in the fridge

as for curfew, yes I did have one B&B do that, but that was in the sticks so it wasn't such a big deal. We would have been coming home before than anyways.

I had a family stay in Philly one time, we had a curfew because it was a bed in the residence of a family. I've learned that you have to ask the rules of the B&B before booking so that there are no surprises.

We stayed in a B&B home once, which is basically a private home with a guest suite that the owners rent out. The suite had a private entrance, and the hosts left breakfast at the door. It was perfect, and not all that expensive. It made a great base of operations for exploring a city (Seattle), and we could do what we pleased.

Some B&Bs are entirely hands-off, as far as the owners are concerned. I used to stay at a funky guest house in a really obscure town on the California coast where you checked yourself in, took your key off the hook behind the counter when you came in, and left your money in a bowl on the way out. There were folks running around who kept the place clean, but you were entirely on your own; place ran on the honor system. There were breakfast rolls and coffee in the morning, and that was it. If you wanted to cook in the kitchen, you could (and you could use their pots and dishes and utensils) as long as you cleaned up after yourself. It was a great place, if you didn't mind a little cracked plaster and walls covered with rather crude paintings of nude women (painted by the owner), and the beautiful thing was that (according to the staff) nobody ever ran out without paying or complained about having to do for themselves.

I stayed at a B&B on Block Island took the ferry from Montauk. The room was real nice had a hottub built in and a deck overlooking the Atlantic. If you are living in NYC its a nice getaway for a night or 2. There are no cars allowed on the island so its pretty peaceful and you can rent bikes or mopeds.
