a vacation of sorts...the alaska thing

for the past couple of summers i have been debating on whether or not to spend the summer up in alaska. apparently their is a great opportunity to make some pretty good money up there, either working at a fishing camp, on a fishing boat, and stuff like that. a friend of mine who is also interested in going said that his cousin made some good money working on tour boats and whatnot.

i was wondering if anyone has any information on it, whether it be from your own experience or and experience of another.

I went on a cruise last summer. I got a chance to meet a few people who "summer" up there and if you have a chance to try it one year, go for it. Every place we went was absolutely beautiful. In Skagway we went by a campground where a lot of the seasonal workers live. Some spend months in a tent. So know what kind of arrangements are available before you go.

I would love to go and spend some serious time up there.

Dont expect to make that money easy though--you are going to work harder than you probably ever have to make it. Working on a fishing boat is a hard job--up early as all sin, working hard all day, it wont be easy. Would be a good experience though. Id go for it if you get the chance.

I'm going up in April to work as a deckhand. This site... Has everything you could want to know about setting yourself up. How to get there, who to talk to, job listings etc. You have to subscribe to the site, but it is very much worth it.

Do not come up without a job lined up unless you are in construction. Framers, sheetrockers, and plumbers are always in demand it seems.

There used to be rediculous money in the fishing world, until 1989 and the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Since then, even in areas that were not directly impacted by the spill, the money has been a lot harder to come by. Don't expect to get a job in a cannery and come away with anything more than an $8 per hour job. As far as fishing on a boat is concerned, you make your money on a percentage basis, and if your boat doesn't catch much, you don't make much regardless of how hard and long you work. Its not as glorious as you'd think. Also, crab fishing in the berring sea is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
