Recently, while doing the laundry I snuck up on my punching bag and mugged the hell out of it with a stick. It broke. I need a new one, because there's obviously something wrong with me, but I'm not sure where to look for the best deals on sports equipment.

What I'm looking for is a leather/vinyl/canvas punching bag that's around 50-150lbs.

find a martial arts store and buy from there.

I would definately not suggest buying one off the internet, because, well... do YOU want to pay shipping costs on something that is 4 feet long and 150 lbs?!?

Martial arts stores would probably have better prices than the sports equipment stores in malls.

A few places will ship them empty so you can fill them up yourself to save on shipping. I have access to a lot of sand for free so its not really an issue for me, but if you have to fill up a 70lb bag and pay for the sand, it may be a bad idea.

Then again, I think I may just check out some martial arts stores, that is a really good idea.

I went to a few places today and noone had them. Fucking loser sports retailers, I should use them as punching bags.

I don't think the doors in my house can stand up to being punched open/closed much longer.

ok so if you are looking for a heavy punching bag, you are looking for a few things, which you will have to prioritize.

1. Price. Obviously some bags cost more than others.
in decending order of price, bag material
Leather
Waterbag rubber compound
Vinyl
Synthetics (a stitched polyvinal or plastic)
Canvas

2. Durability. Pretty much the same as the price list, however i'm not sure about the water bag, I've heard varying things about them, including a leak from day one.

3. Packing material. There are a few types of material: sand, sand/rags, rags, water. The sand is obviously hardest, it will pack tough and might be a rough workout for your knuckles. A sand rag combo is not that common but it provides some give, with a problem being the sand settles to the bottom. A rag filled bag should be factory pressed so you get a solid punching bag. The new water bags are supposedly great for punching, but i've never tried one so i won;t say anything.

Yep. So if you want a long lasting bag with a good punch, try a leather rag- filled bag, although it is quite expensive (about 200-300 canadian for a 100lb-150lb bag). Personally I've gone with a synthetic stitched bag, mainly for price, and it is also very durable.

I hope you found this useful, I can't really give you any advice on how to pack a heavy bag properly because I kinda think that a industrial press will do a better job than I could ever hope to do.
