Best way to grow a Goat T?

I'm currently growing one now but the hair on my chair always grows out frisky. I've been told to shave constantly to get the right consistency but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any advice?

Shaving makes it grow thicker, and faster.

Total myth :)

No, facial hair is all genetics and hormones. Some can grow it well... some can't. Shaving hair doesn't create new hair follicles. It also doesn't increase hair growth, length, nor color of it.

I do agree with Plan9 that shaving doesn't actually make hair grow in thicker.

It can, however give the illusion that hair is thicker, since the hair now has blunt ends, instead of tapering off. :edit: Also, hair grows in stages, so shaving may cause more hairs to be at the same length at the same time, making it appear that shaving caused it to grow in thicker, when in fact those hairs would have grown in anyways.

Strangely enough, though, all though middle school/early high school, I was clean shaven except for a peach fuzz mustache. Now, I've grown it all out, and everything that I repeatedly shaved is thick, red, and long...the mustache is no longer peach fuzz, but it's still very soft and much thinner than my beard (which is curly). Also, right around the edges of my mustache (where the goatee and the mustache connect to form what I believe is called a Van Dyke), I rarely shaved...and it's never grown in...strange.

Anywho, best bet is just to grow it. It may never be thick, or it may just take a while (both in aging, and just allowing it to grow in more).

Good luck.

Black magic marker? ;)

My buddy (in my Avatar) just turned 9 this month - he's got a kick ass grey goatee working for him.
As for your situation, just give it time and let'er grow.

EDIT - My buddy is gone (for now) but he'll be back.

Yeah, my goatee wasn't a full on the sides for a while, and then it just grew in over time. You just gotta wait it out.

bookerV 01-15-2004 01:43 PM

go a couple weeks without shaving your face at all, then just cut it out at the end. even if it isnt perfect it will look much better than to a bad beard

phaedrus 01-15-2004 02:30 PM

My 2 cents: You'd probably look better clean shaven. If the hairs don't grow in, then they don't grow in. There isn't much that can be done about it. (maybe a hair transplant or something, but even considering that would be dubious at best.) Sparse or patchy beards are not attractive. If you grow one anyway, keep it neatly trimmed.

aphex140 01-16-2004 03:16 AM

lI agree with bookerV.

Then you can see if you can flair you side boards. I thought that by letting the hair grow it would be thicker.

I have a goatee and that how i started it, although the vertical parts at the side of the mouth are the one you really have to wait for ( well in my case and under the bottom lip.

LStanley 01-16-2004 03:37 AM

just let it go and keep trimming it even

kulrblind 01-16-2004 05:34 AM

agreed.... let it grow, and experiment with it. Some guys (myself included) can't "connect" on the sides, but that doesn't mean you can't do something kickass with it anyway. Goatees were "in", then "out", then "in" again... change it up, it makes people take notice.

It took me 8 months to manage a respectable goatee; for the first 6, I got a lot of "you missed a spot shaving" comments.

Don't shave for a few weeks, then shave around where you want the goatee to be. It will help a bit, but you'll look scraggly for a while.

RemyLebeau97 01-17-2004 12:16 AM

Im with MrSelfDestruct, just shave every where else cept where you want your goatee to grow, in a few days/weeks you'll start to see it develope.

Dano069 01-20-2004 01:52 PM

I usually grow a full beard and then trim it down to a goatee. Currently, I've gone from goatee to the Fu Man Chu look.

There was this series on the human body on the Discovery channel a couple years ago. They were saying that being happy and being in a relationship increases hair growth becuase of the amount of testosterone being produced.
Just thought I'd share.

Harshaw 01-21-2004 10:30 PM

It has taken me months for the sides to grow in properly. You just sort of have to wait.

your buddy? the penguin or the polar bear?

Enka 01-24-2004 11:14 PM

I say let everything grow and grow until you think its ready to be formed into a goatee. Thats what I usually do, just cuz im too lazy to shave more than once a week :)

seizei 01-25-2004 01:39 AM

not reply from ratbastid? wasn't that his project for awhile?

Bobaphat 01-26-2004 11:49 AM

The best way to grow one is to not. The Goatee and the Van Dyke have been done to death in the past 10 years or so.

I love goat Ts. But I agree with the rest also.
Hair is genetic. Some have it, some dont.
