Damn Flu Shot!

I just got my bloody flu shot on monday, and I'm sick today. I know it's just anecdotal evidence, but this happens EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.

Ugh.

The flu shot cannot give you the flu but I believe it can distract your immunse system enough to allow another virus or bacteria to get a foothold.

get well soon !

Yes, I get sick, too. My wife never does.

Flu shots cannot give you the flu, but the new nasal vaccination, Flu Mist (or something like that) does. You inhale live (but weakened) flu virus through your nose. It's more expensive, but you don't get the needle. And 'cause it's live flu virus, they won't give it to anyone over the age of 49, which is sorta the danger zone for flu -- and I'm just about there.

At least you got your shot. The news says the vaccine makers are out of stock for this year and can't make more for months. The only doses left are what's still in the pipeline. Really heavy demand this year, because of news stories about an early and serious flu season.

Sparhawk,

Aw man, that sucks. I hope I don't get sick this year, I didn't get a flu shot. Like Rodney says, I think they're out of stock for this year's flu vaccination. We should all throw immune system pep rallies.

Get better soon, Spar!

Man, that sucks. I'm sorry. Flu shots don't make me sick, but other vaccines and boosters have fucked me up for a while in the past.

Flu shots tend to make me feel a bit lethargic the next day, but I rarely get sick off of them. On the plus side, I haven't had the flu in 5 years since I started getting them.

My mother got sick about a week ago. She's gotten better since, but my grandmother got the flu shot a couple of days ago, and has been in bed with the flu ever since. I have NOT gotten the shot, and have no intensions of doing so. Since I see both of them daily, I am just hoping my immune system holds the virus off long enough for me to finish my finals.

Apparently this year's flu shot doesn't match the strain of flu that's going around exactly, so it may not give you complete protection. Fortunately, the kind of flu it does prevent is very similar.

I read about it here: http://my.webmd.com/content/article/...000_1000_ts_02

They were giving out Flu Mist free at our student health center so my cousin and I went and "snorted" it. Little different, but definitely better than a shot.

From what I've heard this year's flu shot isn't going to be all that effective. As jeebus said, they missed the strain that is getting passed around. Every year we've got to predict what strains are going to be spreading in the US and vaccinate against those, and every now and then the scientists miss. It's bound to happen. Sucks that this is one of said years, but hey...it happens.

You probably do not have the flu, only the symptoms of the flu. That is because the flu shot causes your body to produce antigens that will fight the strains of the flu the shot is tailored for. Your body's immune system is what causes most of the symptoms you experience when you have the flu, not the flu iself.

Ever since I learned how they make the flu vaccines I stear clear of 'em.

Most people I've ever know has gotten somewhat sick from them anyway, so I'd rather take my chances.

About 4 days after getting my flu shot, I started to get symptoms of flu. A bit fatigued, light headache, light fever, cough and a stuffy nose. At first I thought it was a cold, but then on the radio I heard "colds can be mistaken for flu. colds, however do not cause fevers so if you have a fever, you have the flu". So I guess I have the flu. I guess I caught the A-Fujian strain they missed in the shot.

IIRC, they take live flu virus, inject it into chicken eggs and let it multiply. Once they have a lot of it, they disable it by means of radiation or something then put it in the vaccine. The disabled flu makes your body produce anti-bodies but since the virus is disabled, it won't do any harm.

I was thinking the same thing, but then I realized--what's the difference? He still feels sick.

I haven't gotten my shot yet because I already came down with the flu. Now my uni won't give anyone a shot unless they are high risk--but they have flumist. I'm wondering if I should even bother since I've already gotten sick and the vaccine doesn't cover the strain.
