tips on shaving face/neck?
Does anyone have a trick or something they use to make sure you get a clean shave? I shave every morning with an electric razor, but am unable to get my face and neck perfecly smooth. There is always some small stumps that get left behind that the electric razor can't get. Also a regular razor can't get it well and it just hurts to run the razor against them. My neck is the worst area, because its really hard to get the razor or electric razor to cleanly cut all the hairs down to the skin since I have an adam's apple that kinda sticks out. I also get finer hairs on my cheek and forehead that is hard to get rid of. Any ideas or tips?
I thought about letting all my facial hair grow a bit and just waxing all of it off. Would that work? or are they too deep. Thanks, Robert |

i don't ever use an electrical, doesn't cut up my hair well, just seems to yank on it. i also have a sensitive neck. so when i use a regular straight edge, i do one of two things... either i shave right after getting out of the shower while the skin (and usually hair, too, i shave only every 3-5 days, i'm lazy) is still wet and soft, or i take a wash cloth, soak it with warm to hot water and then hold that up to my neck so that it can moisten and soften the hair. and i usually don't get many nicks or cuts that way, unless the razor's old.

ugh don't wax your face! Just not very manly, even if it does work (wouldn't know).
To get a very smooth shave, I suggest using a mach3 or other triblade type razor and using a good gel/foam shaving cream. Shave down then up to get it really smooth, and just be careful around your adams apple. Make sure you rinse your blade thoroughly with hot water between each swipe or you can cut yourself easier.

I have an electric that shaves wet and lathered. Otherwise, there's always Williams Lectric Shave - it's a lubricator. The electric is for lazy weekends.
The weekday shaves are Mach 3 or Sensor blades. Follow and stay close to the contours of your face. Run water over it bewteen strokes - not too hot or it bends the blades.

I would suggest shaving in the shower with a non-fog mirror.
Make sure it's decently hot. Make sure you have a good blade. (I use an Sensor Excel) Tap the blade to make sure you get out the cuttings inbetween every few strokes. And I wouldn't suggest shaving cream that just irritates things. At first, go with the grain...then when you're fairly clean go against it. Feel with your finger tips areas that might still feel rough. You might not get it all, but in the end you'll have a close shave & you won't feel burnt. Take it from me...I have to shave both my head & face everyday. |

I have a lot of shaving problems as well. One of mine is that when I shave under my nose where a mustache would normally grow I can never get rid of all the hair 100% there's always some left behind. Also where I have shaved the area so much it's all rough and has a slight darkness to it and sometimes looks like I didn't even shave it. I use a Mach3turbo, Edge pro gel, and Nieva aftershave balm. It's pretty much the closest shave I can get and Im not satisfied with it. I was even thinking about hitting up an old school barber shop where they do shaves just too see how close they can get it. As for you, Im gonna have to agree with what Rogue49 said about shaving in the shower using a non fog mirror. This way the hot water and steam will hit your face softening up those hairs. Good Luck !

if your gonna get a non-fog mirror, get a good one. i tried doing that a few months ago, bought a cheap non-fog mirror, and it sucked. didnt' give a good enough reflection once wet for me to be able to see what i was doing or how good of a shave i was getting. but in the shower is great for the skin compared to later.

Leave the shaving cream/gel/oil in for a minute to let it penetrate. Shave with mild hot water, rinse with cold water to close up pores and the theory goes prevents ingrown hairs.
Stretch the skin as tight as you can with your other hand to get as close to a flat surface as you can. |

I tried some of the tips and it does seem to help. I did it last night to just try it out and my face had ever been so smooth
![]() Only problem is was I did it around 8 oclock and by 11-12 I started to have that shadow. Yes, thats how fast my freakin facial hair grows. It started to feel like sand paper too. Is there any way to slow the hair's growth slightly so I can go at least a day without feeling like sand paper or looking like a homer simpson? Thanks, Robert |

I don't know how to stop facial hair growth short of electrolysis, but here's my tip on shaving:
Go slowly. Slowly. You aren't doing your face any favors if you try to race through your shave. I generally shave after I get out of the shower, and I use shaving gel. Since I go slowly, it starts to get a bit dry eventually. A handful of water rubbed over the face makes it slick and moisturizing again, and the hair gets softer each time. |

I have no idea if it really works, but Aveeno has a shaving gel called Positively Smooth which is supposed to reduce hair growth: "This breakthrough formula with an exclusive combination of natural soy, skin-silkening soy extract, and skin conditioners has been shown to naturally minimize the reappearance of unwanted hair with continued use so you can shave less often."
I use it, can't say I've really noticed a difference, but for you it might be worth a shot. It smells nice, too; somewhat almondy. There's also a facial lotion, which I haven't used. You can get the gel in the shaving area of CVS (or probably any other drugstore), but the lotion is over in the women's aisle.

Funny you mention this topic, my skin is normally irritated pretty easily. The only advice I could tell you is to go to google.com and do a search on "shaving tips" you'll be amazed by how many pages will pop up and you'll learn A LOT to help you get a cleaner, smoother, less irritated shave

I use a generous amount of shave gel, any brand. And a mach 3 turbo for the usual shave and on special occasions you cant be a straight razor.
