How to get a job after college

That's my question. I graduate in 5 short weeks and have NO job. I'm graduating with a degree in CS, minor in Math and Electrical Engineering, with a 3.5 GPA. However, I have no job. How the hell do you manage to land one after college?

Check job boards. Ajb.org, monster.com, flipdog.com, etc.

Go to your college career center. They are very resourceful.

Good luck!!! I graduated last March with a B.S in Computer Networking Management, a 3.75 GPA and my CCNA. I would recommend flipdog it was alot of help. Although it didn't get me a job it has good results.

Consider government work. It's fairly recession-proof, and they're always looking for CS majors, especially in DoD.

Do they have any websites or such where I can browse?

If flipdog didn't work, what got you hired? Or have you been hired?

Talk with your professors (particularly one who likes you) and see if they might have some contacts you could call. I found my last job that way.

Fill in the blanks:

"I went to school and majored in CS because I wanted to learn how to ________ and get a job at _______ when I got out"

That may sound stupid, but you majored in CS for a reason, didn't you? Once you know what you want to do, figuring out where you want to do it is easier.

You did think about this before you went to college, right?

Anyway - that will give you your "in a perfect world . . " choices.

Delay your graduation and get an internship.

I got my first job by going to my school's career counseling office. I saw a notice on a corkboard abouta job. I tore the notice down (less competition) and called the company up. I was hired!

I got my current job by answering an ad in the paper. Who'd a thunk it!?

Nice idea, but I'm in debt up to my eyeballs at this point.

I wish I could go home to have a good base of operations, but, due to circumstances beyond my control, that is no longer an option. I have got to have some sort of income to roll into when I get out of here.

At this point, I'm thinking Mickey D's.

You can try www.governmentjobs.com
or http://www.cpol.army.mil/
Government work is great for anyone in the IT sector. They're always looking for good technical people because the turnover rates are high when the economy is good - so they stock up on them when the economy is bad, and hope some stay.

High GPAs mean higher salarys (i.e. your high gpa might land you a GS 7 step 10 pay). I think the great thing about government work is job stability. You will never get laid off, and unless you do something REALLY stupid, it's hard to get fired. Plus they have loan repayment plans and will pay for your graduate degree. Definitely look into it.

Trust me, I am. I interned with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory over the summer, and loved the work. I could really get into to doing work for the government. It was very cutting edge, which surprised me to no end.

Thanks for the links! I appreciate the assistance everyone has given me.

Well, as an interesting sidenote: LLNL finally got back to me today about the status of my potential employment there. Boy, they really did not like me. I don't think I've ever had a performance review that bad. So much for government work....
