My dream house.

This house was built by Richard Branson -CEO of Virgin. It is on an island and supposedly completely self contained with solar power and a rainwater collection system. Branson, being the everpresent businessman has decided to rent this out to vacationers. (I think that it might not be as self contained as it once was... it was mentioned in a Sports Illustrated article a few years ago... A quick websearch reveals nothing about it's inner workings). Nevertheless, my dream house would be equally isolate and self contained. I could live on ocean fish and go hunting for the wild goats (sorry Averett) that share the island.

The inside of the house is your typical mansion.

Here is a list of the accomidations for a mere 10,000 a day.

Quote:
1 Master Bedroom with bathroom and jacuzzi
4 double bedrooms also available as 2 suites, with adjoining bathrooms
5 double bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms and terraces
Large reception area with book and video libraries, board games, snooker and bridge tables, piano, and excellent music system.
Raised gallery
Inside dining area
Work-out equipment
Full facilities for children
British Management and a staff of 16
35mm slide projector and screen
Photocopier
Electronic Typewriter
Flip Charts
Multistandard video equipment
Cassette tape recorder
The island has direct dial telephone, fax, telex and USA direct lines

Okay so I would lose the staff and my only connection would be a carrier pigeon to the tfp forum... This is financially out of my reach but

Ever read "The Diamond as Big As The Ritz"? That's a pretty accurate description of what I'd like to live in someday.

Impressive. I would have to add a fully equipped dive boat and a seaplane.

For me it is the flipcharts. Well, I soppose I could live without the flipcharts. It would be awesome to wake up in the middle of the night and have your butler/helicopter-pilot fly to the nearest 7-Eleven to get some Fritos.

This place is obviously made for old people. Where are all the electronic toys and the dark fibre connection?!

Give me those and I'll buy the damn place and move there!

I'd go mental.

Whilst I like my own company and can quite happily be alone for a few days, actually living somewhere with no human contact (outside my immediate companions) would drive me to distraction.

I need people and excitement!!

Nice holiday pad for a few days a year though...

I remember having to draw up the plans for a dream house in grade school. I had swimming pools, a home theater, an arcade, a bowling alley, the works.

But I forgot the bathrooms.

Mine is to build it under a waterfall with the roof being glass looking up at the river and a window to watch the watter fall, and all of that is in the living room.

Crazy

- Waste of time and money. Living alone in a mansion large enough to house the refugee population of a third world country is absurd.

- Isolation = suicide. When you don't have neighbors, anyone can kill you and get away with it. You could fall down, crack your head and bleed to death because there's no one around to help you. You could light your house on fire by accident and not be able to do anything to save it because there's no fire department anywhere nearby.

- Hooray for capitalism at work - obscenely rich people who don't know what to do with their money who waste it building largely useless dream houses on deserted tropical isles.

Maybe to your viewpoint. I know plenty of other people with the viewpoint that to spend their money on other people is equally absurd. Neither group has any more right than the other to call the other's ideas absurd.

Again, to your point of view. Personally, I love isolation, and like nothing more than spending time in the middle of nowhere. Dont forget, humans have been around much longer than fire departments, and the possibility of murder and injury have always been there. We are still here. I can assure you that the possibility of being murdered is much less in the back woods of Maine than it is in NY city.

Yes, it is capitalism at work. And capitalism sucks sometimes, quite frequently actually. But what would you prefer? A broken socialist or communist system where the reigns of power are even more segregated to the rich with no hope of change?

I'm a clumsy deaf gal, so my ultimate dream house would be the typical nice stuff(especially with hardwood floors!) but the little twist would be the structure frames would be made of nerf like material. That would mean an end to the bruises from running into walls and falling on the floor! Now, to just find someone to do that for me...
