I have many bars and restaurants that I like, some have come and gone.
Bars I don't frequent like I used to which really means I was a bartender groupie. I used to follow lady bartenders all over the city. Was great because I'd get some great drinks and have good company without that heavy bar bill at the end of the night. Buy backs are great. Restaurants are a whole different story. One that I've been going to for many many many many many years now is the Vietnam Restaurant on Doyer Street in Chinatown. Good food, very inexpensive, fast service.

i'm a republic fan...
the vietnamese restaurant.... 10 Doyer Street, downstairs It's just on the other side of Chatham Square and Bowery. It's far from all the trains, which is good because when it winds up on Time Out NY it's crowded for a few weeks.. then people don't like the long walk to it. I recommend the grilled beef over rice. US$3.95, Fried Quail US$6.95, Salt and Pepper Squid (special), Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crabs (special) Spicy Eggplant. Wife likes Bun, but doesn't get it there. Also the Spicy Beef Jerky Papaya Salad is good too! also good... Sammy's Gourmet Asian on 6th Ave and Father Demo Square (Bleeker St) Wife recommends the Bun, I recommend the pork chop over rice... great for lunch it's inexpensive.

Sounds delicious, Cynthetiq. Thanks for the tip and the location. The Time Out eating and drinking guide is the shit! I found both of those places in there and read great reviews. I think we'll eat in Carroll Gardens tonight on Smith Street. That's where the bar I work at is and I have to swing by to get something. Smith Street is really getting to be too packed with restaurants. Thanks again.

Well eyeronic, the bit I remembered from KC was that Les Halles (New York) was very much his restaurant in that he is the executive chef there. I don't know if he has anything to do with any of the other restaurants in the chain.
Here's the website for Les Halles NY: http://www.leshallesny.citysearch.com/ The recipes are linked from there and contain such gems as this: Quote:

Do you like Falafel? (Trust me... the FALAFEL, not the Shwarma which is also good but trust me.) Best falafel in NYC @ Azuri Cafe W. 51st Street @ 11th Ave... (see the trend of far from everything?) It's the best! Go there early on Friday because he's closed for Sabbath. Since you are in NYC or if anyone else here is planning on going to NYC, check out www.restaurant.com for 50% off gift certificates (there are other cities too!) and www.restaurantassociates.com (the mailing list gets you some gift certificates at member restaurants)

Favorite Bar: <A HREF="http://www.drinkgoodstuff.com">d.b.a.</A>
d.b.a. is on First Ave between 2nd and 3rd Streets. They've got a superb selection of fancy-schmancy beer and a jaw dropping selection of malt whisky (and other liquors, too). All in a nice neighborhood bar. Awesome. I hope I did the link thing correctly. |

My favorite bar for live music when I'm in NY is Kenny's Castaways. I'm a little biased... I played there once! My dad hung out there when he was growing up. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and The Smithereens got early gigs there, there used to be murals of both bands on the walls. They're gone now. Still a great place to catch some live music.

Fianlly tried the much hyped "Frank." Great, solid, italian with a cool hipster atmosphere. I think the crowd is what draws the crowd more than anything else. How's that for a conundrum.
