The inevitable..how much do you bench?
since I bench so little
I'll start it off, and after seeing my pathetic number im sure everyone will be a little happier to share their own :p I don't bench very often, it's not part of my chest workout..I use a public gym and don't go with a partner, so using it by myself ties up the bench for a while and I can't safely do my maximum, because if I ran out of steam i'd be shit outta luck  but as it is I can bench around 120 hehhhh but im interested in how much you guys bench? |
for normal workouts, I do 130 lbs, in 3 sets of 8.
I rarely try to do the most weight I can, because of shoulder problems, but last time I did I put up 185 lbs. twice (I weigh 155) |
I built a bench out of leftover redwood 2x4s and 2x6s. It's about 25 pounds. I can lift that over my head.
|
max 225lbs.
|
3 sets of 6 - 8 reps at 90 kilos.
|
I used to be able to bench close to 300 lbs.
But since I've started running and I have lost a bunch of weight, the number is down to 225 |
I'm working my way up to 200. I'm currently at 175 for 10 reps as a third set. I start with 115, then go to 135 and then on to 175. I'm due to up the weight this week. I think I've maxed out at 250, but that was a LONG time ago.
|
I have been cutting lately so my max would most likely be lower then normal. It has been over a year since I tried to max. Currently when working my chest on bench press, I start out at 190lbs @ 8 reps, then increase the weights with each set (I do 4 sets) until im up to about 215ish lbs (depending on how tired I am) and I do my reps until exhaustion. If I was to guess what my max is, id say about 235...i'll have to see once I start increasing my calories again :)
I prefer dumbell flys over the bench because benching is so hard on my shoulders. |
250 until back problems put an end to bench-pressing.
|
I have maxed out at 325, but right now it is probably 295. I have squatted 455, no belt or wraps, and deadlifted 425, no belt or straps, but it has been awhile. I have lifted since college, and I am thirty now. I am also a personal trainer.
|
Sigh.. it's so low.. I can do 140 once. But then again, I only weigh 150 and I haven't been doing weight training for but 4 months. I could probably do a lot more once I get my triceps strenghtened, because those are always what I feel after benching, not my chest or anywhere else.

I am currently 170lbs. and workout with 225, typically 3 sets of 8, 6, and 4 before I crash. I don't max very often because I don't have a regular spotter. With spotter, I have put up 315 once. That was a few years ago when I was a badass, now I am just an ass.
|
I'm 165lbs, and I've been doing dumbbells lately of 40s, 45s, and 50s, 10 for each set. I have no clue what I can bench with a bar, maybe 135?
|
SParhawk, I bet you do way more than just 135 :P
Me personally, I weigh about 165 or so and bench 200. This my max tho. The way I do my sets is I do 4sets of 8, increasing about 10pounds each time. I get up to about 180. |
I guess a safe bet on a good day is about 235 for 6-8 reps...haven't maxed out ever so I have no idea what that would be...
|
max: 210
I dont incorporate a bench into my workout routine because i never have a spot and cant really do a decent set w/o one, so dumbell chest press has to do. |
Haven't lifted in quite a while, so i bet im down to around 120 or so since i never do any working of my chest in my dialy non workout rutine.
When i was benching though, i think i maxed at 185. i weighed 125-130lbs at the time though. Not a lot, but almost 1.5 times my bodyweight. Nothing spectacular or great, but i was happy with it |
I max out at 330... but I seldom throw up that much weight at one time... it's safer for you to max out with a rep system... like 185 or 225 as many times as you can...
|
i max at 185 but i dont bench regularly.
|
I also don't bench heavy or regularily. A big chest is not part of my needs. In fact, a big chest is sometimes a big negative for fight training.
|
I typically do a set at 135, one at 155, one at 185 and then depending on how I feel another set of one of the above numbers. I never really have tried for a one set max as I don't work out with a partner, but have done 210 a few times, so I imageine I am around 225.
|
Hot damn! Yesterday at the gym, I benched 150 twice, then 160 once! Woooo! That is awesome for me because I weighed in at 155, and when I started seriously working my chest a month ago I started benching at 110 pounds. Next weekend I'm gonna see if I can do 160 twice (or maybe even more) :)

I don't work out very often, but I can bench 275lbs once. I seem to get stronger as I get older without too much work.
LSD |
i do a warm up w/ an olympic bar and 2 plates to start (135) then three increasing sets: 265, 275, 285 then down to 225 for a burn out to finish. regardless of what the other guys at the gym are doing, it's important to stick to your routine then work your way up as your strength increases. a lot of pro's (off juice) swear by the idea of focusing on form. if you're trying to get cut/big, isolating the muscle group is key. good luck.
|
I work out with 105-115. I usually do not max out.
|
I think some of you guys are exagerating. I was tempted to add a little weight but did not.

385 on a good day, rep 220lbs
|
Out of High School I was able to get 325. Haven't done much since. (Read 12 years later)
I was over at a friends house a while ago and he was doing the bench with 260 on there and I thought what the hell. I warmed up with his dumbells. And then gave it a try. Well lets just say I am not as strong as I used to be. I got it up but had some help. I think my spotter was helping more that he said he was. To spare my fragile ego. I really think I need to start working out again. I can really Identfy with this guy. Quote:

max 185
|
maybe it would be better for people to say how much more (weight or percentage-wise) they can bench -over- their body weight.
seems more fair that way. on a good day, i maybe can bench 1.5 times my body weight (free weight barbell). |
