Fingertip training
I have long lanky fingers. I would like to make them into crazy fishhooks of death.
Know any good training exercises for this? Currently I've just been doing some push-up type exercises holding my weight up with my fingers. I'm not so sure this is exactly what I'm looking for since holding that much weight requires that I straighten out my fingers (they aren't hooks at that point).

This is my specialty... crazy fish hooks of death. Once I stuck my hand in the ocean and pulled out Leviathan himself. Serious fish hooks...
The secrect is watermelons. Young watermelons. Exactly three weeks old. Not three weeks from when you bought them, but three weeks from when they first show on the vine. You need to dip your hand into a bucket of cold tomato juice and then make a swiping motion with your hooked fingers into the flesh. Err... what the heck are you talking about?

You dont have muscles in your fingers to train, silly
The fingers are moved partly by muscles in the hand, but most of the work is done by muscles in the forearm. These muscles do not attach directly to the different joints of the fingers, they attach by means of long tendons. I could suggest rock climbing as a way to ensure that you are stengthening the areas in which helps you have a better "fishhook of death" . *Edit: Also, make sure that you concentrate on having good form on your grip while doing your other weighted exercises. This will help in the area in which you want to improve as well. Last edited by Plan9Senior; 09-14-2003 at 09:30 PM.. |

Get some big jars with lids about the size of your palm. Fill each part way with water. Hold each with your fingers spread around the circumference of the lid, with fingers bent. Now just hold onto them until your hands tire out. You can hold them straight out from you, with your arms parallel to the floor. You can also move around and move your arms while you hold them. You can strengthen your legs and sit in a low stance while you hold the jars. Just don't let go until you can't hold on any more - only takes a few minutes.
Do that every day. Once it gets easy, add more water. Once it's full, start adding sand to the jars. Once it's full of sand, add gravel, then metal shot. Your finger flexors (anterior forearm muscles - flexor digitorum) will be strengthened greatly from doing this. If you really want your crazy fishhooks of death, find a good kung fu instructor who does tiger claw. They'll help you out good

Yeah, re-reading my post fails to yield me referencing any "finger muscles". The rock climbing idea is a good one. I've tried the indoor rock climbing bit a few times and it makes you sore in fun places seizei: That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. Awesome! I'll go pick up some jars today when I'm at the mart. Also, I do practice kung fu and that's sort of how this whole thing came up. I just started learning a tiger form. bundy: Another good suggestion! jimk: Actually, I do play the bass guitar with an exaggerated action so that it requires about 5 time the amount of usually required pressure for fretting the strings. Lunchbox7: Hahaha, I like the pizzeria idea!

I have seemed to get a good finger/forearm workout when i chop wood and i alter hands with hold the axe and the other picking up wood to chop (ie put it on the choppping block).
I also have these hand gadets that you squezze in and out (probably works the same as a tennis ball, but probably with more resistance) Although that may not work to well for your situation (ie not everyone needs to chop wood) giving massages has helped my hand strength a bit. |

Try to rip a penny in half......it is possible after a lot of training. Switch between fingers and try to tear it in two. Just don't pinch your girls nips afterwards....might accidentally rip them off.

There is a martial arts master that attends the WHFSC (World head of family soke-ship council) meeting every year that can hold a full deck of playing cards and tear it in half, all at once. Freaking insane hand/finger strength.
Work up to that and I'll be very very scared of you

I don't know if you are serious or not, but I am in this post.
For rock climbing training, I do pull-ups using just my fingertips on top of door jams. Try to find wooden, three-quarter inch jams. My old house used to have them for every doorway in the house. Whenever I walk through a doorway, I pause and do between one and five pull-ups. This works very well. I can now do between one and three pull-ups on a half-inch metal jam every time. The metal jam was painful at first, but your fingers will become used to it if you persist. A couple of tips: 1. Make sure the jam is well secured to the wall. <-- very important as to not have people come running over to find out 'what was that crash?' 2. Hand placement is very important. Much like doing push-ups, the further apart your hands are, the easier it is to pull up. Also, with a wider hand placement, you can get your thumbs up on top for extra grip. 3. Clean your hands and the top of the jams you will use. Slipping off causes a very painful 'snap'. 4. Trim your fingernails down. They don't help you grip. If they catch on the jam when you slip, it is very painful.
