What kinds of tricks can I teach my dog???
 

Hey there...I want to teach my dog some new tricks...I was wondering what other tricks I could teach him...be realistic...so far he can do these things:

Sit
Lay down
Speak
Stay
Up (up on two legs)
Shake (Shake hands)

I am meaning to teach him to roll over...haven't had the time tho...So what else can I teach my dog??? THANX

How to get an education and use it?

I've frequently taught new dogs how to play fetch, with a frisbee. Also successfully taught a dog (after he learned how to play fetch) how to catch the frisbee in the air with his mouth. :)

Really, it's all about patience and just having fun while you're playing with the dog. :)

Change "shake" to "high five," then teach him "high ten." He'll need to learn to jump.

Although I guess it'd be "high four" and "high eight." Gaah doggie feet.

Good idea sledge...it shouldn't be that hard since he already knows how to shake...I also remembered a couple more things he can do:

He can catch stuff in the air

teach him to crap in the toilet

Sit PRETTY??? How's pretty??? Dance??? How do you teach a dog to dance??? Any type of way??? Crawl is a good one...he'll find a toy but only the one's he likes and wants to play with...he will come to you when you tell him to

What kind of dog?

Teach him to have cookie placed on his nose and wait for your command to 'get it boy {or girl}'

It's supposed to be a natural thing for dogs to do but my little cavalier snags it only about half the time.

The rest of the time it's a mad scramble to recover it from where ever his little face flung it.

Roll over is pretty easy too...it just an extention of 'lie down'

My dog is so jaded with his tricks these days that all I have to do is open the cookie jar and he's there...paw in the air then quickly down to a quick roll over and back up to the beg position. Without even one command being uttered.

sit pretty is when the dog is in a sitting position with its fron paws up and if you have the dog trained to stand on its back legs it should be pretty easy unless this is a big or overweight dog. Dance is an extension of stand in which you start by putting the treat above the dogs head and slightly to one side(the side you want the dog to turn to) and the dog has to do a 360 while on 2 legs. again big or overweight dogs dont like those tricks that much but I got my beagle who is it a little bit overweight to do those tricks consitently with about four turns for a treat. You gotta make sure they have enough leg strength or else you cant expect too much. getting a dog to walk on their hind legs is also pretty easy if you have them standing because all you have to is put the treat right under their chin and reward them for walking while saying "no" if they try to hold on to your arm.

teach it how to hump......on command! :-D

teach your dog to run around the house a few times, so you dont have to take him for a walk :p

we never taught our dog alot of tricks besides paw/shake. and he catches teh frisbee and stuff. but i dunno if he would be focused enough to learn roll over or any of he complicated ones. he doesn't pay attention very well.

My dogs piss or crap on command. It's real handy when traveling. The command is "hurry"...works like a charm.

One of the dogs we had when I was a kid was taught to accept food or treats only out of your left hand. You could hold his favorite food in front of his nose with your right hand and he wouldn't take it.
A buddies dog will go get him a beer. Funny as hell and damn handy.
Have you ever considered teaching him hand commands?

dogs are excellent learners, but you have to have some patience with them. you don't have to stick to the cliche tricks either, be creative :)

Our neighbors have a border collie they've taught to "pose" - find a stool and teach him to put his front paws on it and look purty.

They also do "are you saaaaad?" and he collapses to the floor, puts his head on his paws and looks up at you with big sad eyes. Cutest thing ever.

He does "bow," too, where he dips his head and torso to the ground and back up again.

Zig zag - stand with your legs apart and have him run a figure-eight around your legs.

Spin in circles.

All kinds of fun stuff.

The most my stupid dogs can do is sit or lay down. I think that they are actually too smart, because they will do it for a treat, but they will never do it if they know that you don't have a treat. They also know tons of voice commands like "dinner", "kennel", "walk", and anything else that benefits them, but they apparently "forget" anything that isn't quite as much fun for them, haha. We've got 3 pembroke welsh corgi's for anyone that was wondering :)

PLEASE, for the love of god teach it not to sniff crotches ;)

My old dog did that all the time, not very impressive when your girlfriend is around, who you want sniffing your crotch ;)

For shaking hands I use Paw. It tells my dog to put her paw up to mine. Shake would be for when he's wet.

I've been teaching my dog how to roll over, he's a smart one so he's been learning fairly well but here's what I've been doing:

First get him to "drop", ie lie flat on the ground, then get a treat that the dog likes and hold it near his mouth so he can see/smell it while carefully turning him and commanding "roll over". As soon as he completes a revolution, give him the treat.

My dog can drop onto his back, anticipating the "roll over" command now pretty good, but he still needs a treat near his mouth to encourage him to roll over.

He also knows how to sit, jump and shake hands :D

I had a dog once that I taught to whisper. I simply commanded "whisper" rather than speek and she barked very softly. It was adorable.

Not that this has anything to do with your dog, but it reminded me of a dream I had last night.

I had a fish. It was a strange little ravenous fish and it was dangerous as fuck, and whenever I saw another one somewhere else I'd take it and feed it to mine the way in the hopes of reducing the population a little bit. After I fed it for the third or fourth time, I noticed that it had grown much MUCH bigger than before. I started to back away. It followed me, and crawled out of the pool. But on land it turned out to be a dog. And it didn't eat me when I tried to pet it. The only problem was, it had short-term memory problems and had trouble learning in the long run.

Maybe you could teach him to eat other dogs and grow bigger and turn into a piranha-dog when underwater.

how about using the toilet ... doesn't some dog do that in a movie?

howdy i was trying to teach my dog to play fetch today but he wouldnt even go for the ball or the stick :confused: despite how much i tried ....so does any 1 know wat i can do ??? :)

A dog that won't chase an item you throw has no fetch instinct. You can still teach him to fetch but it is a command, rather than an instinctual game.

First you teach him to accept an item into his mouth. Use a word like "get it" or something that will still make sense once this turns into fetching later on. Have him sit, say "get it" and gently open his mouth and place a soft toy inside, like a rope chew (not something that might be uncomfortable in his mouth if he struggles).

Once he willingly accepts the item on command, start making him take it from you instead of putting it directly in his mouth. Gradually increase the distance he must move to take it from you. Eventually put it on the floor and make him pick it up.

Now start putting the item a step or two away from you and talling him to "get it". Once he picks it up, encourage him to come to you while holding it. Once he does this, gradually increase the distance he must come to you.

You now have a dog who fetches :) But remember, in this case, the fetching is a COMMAND and you must not tell him to "get it" unless you intend to make sure he does it. As with all commands, if you tell him to do it and then allow him to disobey without consequences, he will learn that obedience is not necessary and will not bother anymore. This doesn't mean you should yell or punish him--just physically control him and bring him over to the toy and put it in his mouth. He will learn that the fetching will happen whether he wants to or not--and once he does it, he gets a treat!

I would highly recommend teaching him to go to the bathroom on command. I've done it with mine and it comes in handy quite often. a Little harder but more of a 'trick' would be to teach him to lift his leg and go on a specific object. Its even better when you teach a girl dog to do this.
I also like teaching dogs to 'shake' themselves, that whole body shake that starts at the head and runs don to the tail to remove water. that is a good one if you have been out in the rain and would like him a bit drier before he comes in the house. can also be used as a 'trick' by giving the command to him when he is wet and standing next to some unsuspecting person.
Also most recommended is teaching hand signals and whistle commands. they can come in useful all the time and you can have a quieter communication with your dog that will impress and amaze your friends and neighbours.

Incidentally, if the dog is from a breed with hip or knee problems (or it's just a large-ish dog) you probably want to steer clear of tricks that have him stand up on his hind legs.

Our Cooper dog has two bionic knees (most expensive free dog I've ever owned!) and, unfortunately, LOVES to "dance".

Same goes for long dogs (corgi or daschund) and jumping--it's a no-no.

I am in the process of teaching my dog to bring specific objects by name. So far she knows the names of three of her toys. When she is not teething anymore (and thus has more control over the chewing thing) I will have her get get useful things, like her leash or my keys.

I did the shake thing with my dog. She did it any way and I kept saying 'shake, Angie' as she did-eventually it became both instinctual and a command because she'd stop and do it again when I said so.
As for tricks, I taught her 'colors' by telling her a toy was a certain color instead of the toy name. So when told 'get the green one', she got the green frog she played with. (then when someone says, but dogs can't see color, you simply say, this one can.:D ) She also knew 'bang! you're dead', 'sit pretty'(begging position), 'high five'(shake hands), dance, and to ring a bell if she had to go out.

As a training aid to teaching a dog to shake on command, try pouring a few drops of water on top of its head. this will almost always cause them to do the shake. try it a few times, if it works, give the command then pour the water followed by praise after the shake is done.

I taught both of my dogs to roll over in just a few hours in an afternoon. I used a small treat and move it in front of them while helping them roll over. I was amazed at how quickly they learned this. Even quicker than sit or lay down. And it's cute trick to show friends!

Teach him this (a variation of SPEAK):

Say "What's on top of the house"

He should say "ROOF!"
