Need help with car insurance!!!

Okay here's the deal.... Right now i'm paying upwards of $5,000/yr for my 1991 chevy beretta gt....I'm 18...clean license......why the hell so much with Geico? I don't get paid until next friday and the money is due Monday.....What the hell can I do? To add onto that I'm on my Fathers policy....and he's pissed bc i can't get the money....I need my car for work and school and he doesn't care....he wants the money or he's taking my plates....he also told me that i have to get my own policy because he's paying more because of me.....what can i do? what companies would give an 18yo a good deal? should i look at local small-time insurance brokers?
thanks in advance

$5000 a year? You, my friend, are being completely screwed up the ass.

I pay about $700 a year on my mom's policy.

I went through a special deal with State Farm, where there were certain requirements I needed to meet before I got the insurance. After that, I was paying $300 a year before my grades dropped.

There's an outfit out there called Mercury Casualty that gives somewhat better rates to young people -- especially if you qualify for the student discount. You buy it through independent agents. If it's available in your area (may not operate in all states), it should be listed in the phone book under insurance, alone with the number of local agents who offer it.

Different companies charge different rates to different groups, based on the kind of customers they actually want to have. Based on the fact that you're a) young, b) male, and c) have a sporty car (I assume, don't know the Beretta), Geico considers you a high risk and not worth the business. Other companies, who see business opportunity in the young-driver market, are willing to offer lower rates IF you meet certain qualifications that generally mean lower-than-average risk: clean record, good student, etc. Geico just doesn't want to bother.

maybe you also need to pick your car based on the cost of your insurance. I want a Z3... I don't want to pay Z3 insurance... I drive a 2001 Neon.

also, what you didn't know that this bill was coming? you get paid on friday, 5,000? Damn.. i need to work where you do...suddenly it's presented to you? all summer you should have been working someplace to gather up the funds and ALL the money gone to paying it. If it takes too much gas, that's yet another reason to get a different car. 4 doors is much cheaper. you don't look as stylish, but hey it's not 5k insurance.

Did you accidentally add on an extra "0"? I know people that have many tickets and still don't pay that much. You need to switch companies friend.

edit: Just thought of this...Did you see the bill? Can your Dad possibly be making you slowly pay for the clothes he put on your back as a youngster?

That seems silly to be paying that much for that car. Sure it's a two door, and it's got a GT moniker. But it's 13 years old!!! Are you carrying full coverage? Please say no...it's not worth it!!! What deductible do you carry?

You'll probably be able to better pricewise on your own. We use progressive, and I like it. Good rates...haven't had to deal with them on a claim yet, though.
