How fast can you run a mile?

While I haven't tried to run a fast mile since I was forced to in high school, I was just wondering how fast some of you are able to run the mile in.

I used to be overweight and out of shape back then and I remember my best time being like 9:23, but that was such a long time ago. When I am at the gym I either use a tredmill at various speeds & inclines or use an eliptical crosstrainer, so I really don't have a sense of what my current time is. I was at Wal Mart today and meant to get a cheap stop watch so I could head to the track in the morning and find out, but I forgot to. Maybe I'll do it Sunday...

I'd try to see how fast I could do it on a tredmill, but I just don't feel comfortable trying to run too fast on those.

I used to run a mile and a half in 7:20 when I was in the Army. Been out for 4 years.... but still fit. I reckon I can still do it in under 8 minutes.

we didn't hvae the mile in high school (australia), but we had 1500 metres (i beileve a mile is 1600). Anywho i got around 7:15 for that.
I am not too sure if i could do that anymore, cause i generally train for short burst of speed, power and strength, namely playing basketball

The biggest problem with middle distances runs was pacing myself. I was either fucked half way through by going to aggressively or at the end had lots of fuel left in the tank which i should've used during the run....

Under 6 minutes. I think my best that I've timed was about 5:45 but I've probably done faster than that on untimed runs.

I don't know...I usually run about 2.1 pr 2.2 miles in 15 minutes at the gym
so that's probably like around 7 minutes per mile?

My personal record is 5:10 but that was in high school when I was in the best shape of my life, I ran a mile the other day and it was just under 7 min.

My best time in the 1500m (like SleepyJack) is 3:59:58 for official timing. I have had a non-sanctioned time at 3:51:12 but while this seems fast too many, I am just about to blow a gasket at this pace and the world record is now in the sub 3:25:00. I dont believe I will ever shave a measley (NOT) ~30 seconds off my best time ..... world records are amazing .......

I can run a mile in just over 5 minutes. I ran the other day and i thik i strained a few muscles under my rib cage cause i decided to do a rigorous sprint towards the end of it.

Some of the tiems on this post are pretty good......nice to see that not all of us sit at our computers all day without any exercise.

around 7-8 minutes...depending on how I'm feeling...
but that's at a steady pace for a long run.

If I open myself up...then probably faster.
but I only do a one-minute finishing sprint at the end...so that's difficult to tell.

i could never break 6 minutes in high school. i had a lot of friends in track and i had one friend who could run a 4:15-4:25 mile. he challenged me to a race and gave me a full lap headstart.

i played basketball on the team and thought i was in good shape. he beat my ass in that race.

he also ran a marathon with a great time without training for it or never having run that distance before.

bastard. running was all a head game of body vs. mind with him.

I run 3 miles in about 22 minutes at a time so that is about 7:20 a mile. I guess if I were to run a mile for pure speed it would be about 6:30-6:45.

Personally I think my best in highschool was like 9:30-10:00.

There was this kid on the track team that could run the half mile in aprox 1:47 I beleive.. But I never knew what his mile was.. I would assume it a bit more than double that, maybe around a 4:00. (Him and his brother both hold national records for various events.. its pretty impressive for highschool kids) Track was pretty much our best sport.. besides swimming(girls)

The other day, for some nostalgic purposes, i ran around my old local high school oval, which is about 400m around i did 4 laps and got 6:23 which was very encouraging for myself (used ot get over 7 in high school), not being a very good middle distance runner, mainly sprints/power stuff.
Maybe i'll try to make a new record each week?

Jeez. I just started running 3 weeks ago (Haven't run since I played football in high school - I was a lineman. Speed in the mile wasn't much of an issue.). I think my first mile was 12 mins even. The next one I timed (early last week?) was at 10:36. I'm training to complete a 10-miler (next weekend! Oh crap!) and ran 5 miles straight (took me just shy of an hour) and 7.5 of 9 miles today (not bad given that 3.5 weeks ago, I couldn't run a mile non-stop.) I figure I'll be sub-10 on Tuesday (I think I'll take tomorrow off). Still niiiiice and slow

I used to run a mile every day on the tredmill on highschool (after taking my inhaler of course ) and yeah i would run it with in incline. I got it down to under 5 minutes. I don't remember exactly what, but I think 4:45 would be a close guess. I know I'm terribly outta shape, and I need to start doing that again. Running that fast made me happy. With my athsma clearing up, I wonder if I could improve upon that.

4:45 is pretty fast, right?

I'm not sure how fast I can run a mile, I usually run 3 miles at a time. Last summer I ran a 5k race (just over 3 miles) and at the first mile marker I was at 6:30, I could probably get faster then that if I were to only run 1 mile.

depends who is chasing me... I usually run faster when I'm racing (triatholons) and one of my workout guys is behind me.

But for a short one mile, I can do 6:15 on a good day, plus or minus depending on altitude, because in Colorado, I couldnt beat 7:00 because of the air.

btw, treadmills are not really accurate measures... I have had one tell me I could go no faster than a 10 minute mile, and another say I did it in 4 minutes.
Go do it outside, and get a watch and a track.
