Driver's License

Well, i dont have one and never had one.

i had a permit that expired on my 18th b-day and i dont know what to do.

i have taken the drivers ed course (behind the wheel) at my school, and all i have to do is take the form they gave to the dps and they should give me a license (at least that's what they guy told me).

but, i dont really need it now cuz i'm 18 (talk about a 100 bucks wasted, but it wasnt my money).

my parents didnt want me to get the license cuz they didnt wanna pay insurance on their vehicles (& i dont have a car).

anyway, to my question, which is regarding insurance.

my parents dont wanna pay it. simple.

so, do i need to present any form of insurance when i go up to dps and would i need to get any form of insurance if i get a license.

i will not be driving any of the family cars since i wont be livin w/ them (movin off to college).

my dad wont let me get the license cuz he's afraid that he's gonna have to pay insurance.

have i confused y'all too much or can anyone shed any light on this?

thanks

Are you going to have a car? Can you afford to pay for it, put gas in it, maintain it, insure it, etc. Do you NEED a car? Think about it long and hard....

... I suggest that you wait and see how you are without one. The other thing is... if you have a car, EVERYONE will want rides.

Call the Texas state police (whatever they're called) or your parents' insurance agent(s) and ask them. Every state has differing laws about this.

Do you need the proof of insurance purely for the driving test? When I got my license it was just to be sure tha the car being used in the driving test was insured. I drove my parent's car, but their insurance info was never recorded.

Many people have licenses without having a car. Those people don't necessarilly have insurance.

I believe the DMV can issue official ID that isn't a driver's license. That may meet your needs.

If you have a license and you drive - you need insurance. period.

i dont need to take any test at the DMV cuz i've completed the 2 driver's ed courses. if i show them the completed form, they will issue me the license w/o any sort of testing (written nor behind the wheel)

and no, i wont be driving. i'll be movin to college (w/o a car) and it's about 5 hrs away from my home.

so i wont be driving.

Dude! Get the Farking license already. Everyone needs a license at some point. If for no other reason you should have it for an ID. You are 18 so join the world, get your license, and get on with it. You might not need it right this minute, but you sure will be glad that you have it by the time that you end up needing it. I can't imagine that your dad will have to pay more insurance just because you have a license - if you don't drive the car. Besides, you are 18 and legal adult. I doubt he will kick you out of the house if you get a license. This is lame, get the license.

No, you will not need to get insurance just because you get a license. You will need insurance only if you are driving a car. Some people's insurance will cover other drivers if you have permission to drive, but for something like a car you either buy or your family gives you, you would need insurance.

Nope.

If you ever need to get license PLATES then you MUST have proof of insurance, otherwise, you're good to go.
