something in my throat

Every now and then, I can feel something lodged in the back of my throat, to the side. Eventually, if I cough enough or kind of move my tongue around right, I can dislodge it. When I have, it seems to be just a lump of food that got caught on the way down. It's like it just gets stuck in my throat, being worked on by my saliva. Is this normal? Does anyone else have this happen? Is it bad for food to just sit in my throat???

Any help is welcomed.

Go talk to a doctor about it. Could be nothing, could be a polyp. Seek expert medical advice.

Crazboos 08-01-2003 09:35 PM

YOU HAVE TROAT NUTS !!!!! They look like little pieces of food, but feel like a peanut piece is stuck back there. It used to happen to me. Then the doctor and my dad told me to gargle with water after every meal. Haven't had them since.

slimshaydee 08-02-2003 04:00 PM

dude I get the same thing I was wondering what they were.
Do yours smell kinda funny?

wario 08-03-2003 01:24 AM

Hey, I get those, too. Never bothered me much. Just food that didn't quite make it down. The only time they bother me is when they manage to come back out. Damn, they stink.

Crazboos 08-03-2003 08:40 AM

Yeah, they do stink! They're small particles of food that accumulate after time and start rotting. Most people get them in the skin folds of their tonsils. The gargling-after-meals thing got rid of them.

johnnymysto 08-04-2003 08:26 AM

I feel very normal now. Not only for having them, but for not being the only one to smell them.

I'll try the gargling after meals.

Thanks, y'uns.

They smell like the worst bad breath. I cough them up after breathing hard during exercise.

Redlemon 05-09-2004 11:15 AM

Thanks for reviving this thread. I never would have thought to ask about this issue. Gargling it is!

mattgical 05-09-2004 08:48 PM

ya, they're like a light green color correct? i thought it may have been mucus, or call me crazy, i thought it was like little tumors.

ya, they stink, but silly rabbit, i cant resist smelling it when it comes out.

Ripsaw 05-10-2004 07:50 AM

Gawd. Not the tonsilith discussion again. This topic creeped me out for weeks. Thank god I don't have them.

LOL I used to get these too back in high school. Everyonce in a while when I would cough or sneeze one of these things would pop out.

Here is a funny story. When I was doing jiu-jitsu one day we were practicing chokes, and it was my turn to be the choke victim. Anyway I get choked really well and start coughing. One of these throat nuts comes flying out of my mouth and my instructor who saw it fly through the air asked me :

"Did you just lose a tooth?"

miko 05-10-2004 01:10 PM

Ok, no offense to anyone here, but this thread is groteskly funny.

manilla nuggets

OMG - this is so funny! The only person I ever met who had these as well called them manila nuggets - I guess b/c they are the color of manila folders????

Sounds like a couple of you have something called Tonsilar Piliths. Bascially your tonsils in the side of your throat have large pits that form. Over time, small pieces of food can get trapped and provide these sensations, and they can also breakdown causing a horrible smell.

What to do: Nothing really. Lots of salt water swishes. Occassionally the trip to the docs office where I can pick pieces of food out of those tonsils. Breath mints also help. Nothing dangerous, just troublesome.

Astrocloud 02-13-2006 10:22 AM

I swear I blame these on having recurrent Sore Throats. The cause of this is having little holes or "crypts" in your tonsils. They are the reason that tonsils used to be removed years ago.

More info is here:

Some doctors recommended this solution:

How odd - I had this exact experience today and wondered if it had a name.

Now I know.

:D

Ain't TFP wonderful?

jRuntlets 02-17-2006 05:21 PM

Tonsilar Piliths is a conditon caused (from what I've been told) by chronic infections of the tonsils. Food being stuck in these 'pits' can often cause odor, a bad taste and infection again. I had severe Tonsilar Piliths prior to having my tonsils removed altogether. See an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist about the problems you are having. They may want to remove your tonsils.

Here is a rather extreme example of tonsilar debris photographed by a doctor:

So the issue is rather common. This person should gargle constantly or get that device that I mentioned above.

Sage 03-17-2006 09:43 AM

ewww!

Now that I know about this, I'm glad I got my tonsils and adnoids removed when I was in second grade! I know Martel gets this sometimes... it really bugs him.

EWWWW!

Martian 03-26-2006 02:30 PM

I've never had an issue like this before. Not saying y'all are freaks or anything... or maybe I am. Anyway, not everyone with tonsils has this problem.

Maybe I'm just waiting for my turn. Who knows.

I have this

I have had this happening to me for a few months now. The sensation often reminds me of having a piece of popcorn seed stuck in my throat which i can feel with my tounge. I visited my doctor two days ago in which she told me that it is caused by a small abscess in my throat which lets of hardened, often cheesey gunk which gets stuck on my tonsils. She has prescribed me with 7 days worth of 500g amoxicillin and a nasal spray to help my sinuses and it seems to be wroking already. So i suggest a visit to your doctor!! hope this helps

Troat nuts...

God, I can't stop saying it.

...

They're all freaks, Martian.

Charlatan 02-20-2008 07:19 PM
