Non-Milk Protein Shake?
I am allergic to Dairy products (gives me skin rashes etc ) . I am trying to gain weight and I got a Whey Protein shake by Designer Whey. It helped me gain weight but along with that the milk extracts made my face look like someone threw acid on it or something (ok not thaaat bad) ..
Now I'm off all whey protein shakes.. my face looks fine.. but I need a non milk whey protein shake... As far as I know whey comes from milk.. so does that mean I'm out of luck? Is there any other type of nondairy protein drink out there that any one can recommend? |

Have you considered egg or soy protein in powder form? I am not sure about the brands, but a simple seach with google will certainly provide you with different selections.
Or just getting your protein from the foods you eat like peanut butter, chicken, tuna, flax seed oil, nuts, etcs. |

Hey degarg,
Since you found the link on bodybuilding.com, check out their forum http://forum.bodybuilding.com and use the search function. I have been able to get a lot of information from the forum. Answer to your question: \/ Are all protein supplements the same? No. Protein supplements can be made from a few different source of protein. These include milk protein, egg protein, soy protein. In addition, not all protein is absorbed in the same way in the body. The better a protein is absorbed by the body the higher the Biological Value (BV) the protein is said to have. What is the BV rating I see associated with protein? This measures the amount of protein ( or more precisely - the nitrogen) retained in the human body per gram of protein absorbed. This measure started out as a percentage - with a whole egg being at the top of the chart - 100% nitrogen absorbed. However, things got a little more confusing when Whey Protein was discovered. The problem is whey is a better source of protein than an egg - so it actually scores higher than 100. This means the percentage must be dropped - because greater than 100% does not make much sense. So, today BV is a number which lets you compare different types of protein. Currently 159 is the highest possible BV. Here is the BV of some common foods: Protein BV Whey isolate 110-159 Whey concentrate 104 Whole egg 100 Cow's milk 91 Egg white 88 Fish 83 Beef 80 Chicken 79 Casein 77 Soy 74 Rice 59 Wheat 54 Beans 49 |

oh cool..
I didn't know about BV.. Since I can't have Milk Products I guess I'll have to go with eggs.. I'm already consuming about 6 whole eggs a day :-/ .. forum.bodybuilding.com allows 4 letter word search and above only.. and can't search for egg . if I use *egg* protein it times out.. d'oh.. :-s |

I use soy protein powder with either soy, rice, almond, or coconut milk if I'm avoiding dairy (like I am now).

My doctor has told me that she wants me to do one meal per day of nothing but raw fruits and veggies, so I am interested in what you are seeking.
I have a VitaMix blender coming tomorrow. WTF? A blender with a horsepower rating as much as my lawnmower? But she tells me that I can make appetizing things by throwing all sorts of veggies and fruits into it. We shall see.

I know this thread was necro'd, but it's a good topic.
Soy is a quality protein. So is hemp protein, especially considering the fibre and omega-3s you get with it (though it can taste like ass). For non-dairy, I think your best option is a blend, of which there are several on the market. They tend to mix soy protein with rice and pea protein. You can't really go wrong with that. The problem with egg protein powder is the cost. And eating all those egg whites can get pretty gross after a while.

I offer my apologies if I have broken any unspoken protocols by responding to an inactive thread. I am new here, and didn't notice the dates of previous postings. I noticed a thread with a topic that was relevant and responded to it.
Thank you for the info. Soy and hemp protein sound like worthy additions to a raw veggie smoothie.

Hmmm.... Almonds and bananas sound good. Strawberries are in season where I am currently parked, so I can throw a few of those in for flavor. Sounds great!

When people say they are allergic to milk and dairy, I cant help but think of the cat. Cats are not good at tollerating cows milk - but goats milk is okay - some people get a dicky tummy on cows, but on goats are okay. Unless milk closes your throat up and kills you, might be worth trying a nip.
