Hi all,

Just had a thought, what does everything think the best music is to listen to while driving?

Personally, I like music that you can sing along to but that isn't cheesy. The script - science and faith is my favourite for that at the moment, although things like Chris Brown, Jay Holiday, Tinie Tempah, (rapping along to nelly is always fun, especially when you nail the words, lol).

Got any other suggestions? I'm not that into rock of the last 30 years before anyone says meatloaf etc lol.

What do you like to listen to in the car? Sometimes, on a really long drive, I like listening to what I call 'story' songs that have stories in them, and give you the feeling of progress and movement. Dallas Green/City and Colour are great for that because you can sing along too.

Anyone know any more like that?

For stories, hit "Alice's Restaurant". That's always entertaining.

But for really, really good driving music try Beware of Safety's "Dogs" album. It doesn't have a story-- it doesn't even have words (yay for post-rock!)-- but driving through rainy weather, through storms, god, that album is amazing.

On a roadtrip I love to listen to Western Swing. Old jazz. Ramones and Devo. Nostalgic stuff.

If I have time, I usually make special Road Trip mixes. Mostly songs about the open road and wind in your hair and adventure.

If I don't have time, I go for upbeat and fun. There's nearly always an 80s compilation cd in there. Or if the car has an iPod jack, I'll hit shuffle and skip over the slower emotional songs.

I also like stuff that I can sing along to, usually something upbeat, although I also like a lot of folk and folk rock. Personally, I love me some classic rock, although I've been known to like the modern stuff from time to time also.

I am an unabashed Gleek, so I have a big playlist of Glee songs that I sing with in the car....

Operas and musicals can be good for this, also....

I can never go wrong with some classic to modern rock. Jessica by the Allman Brothers is pretty much the top driving song of all time. On the highway during the day, U2, Bon Jovi, Elton John, Billy Joel, Metallica, and stuff like that are great for singing along or just listening. Sometimes I want to zone out and put on Deadmau5, or speed and throw in Risotto by Fluke, Ivano Bellini's Trance Addiction, or Ultra Electro, and if I'm stuck in traffic (which is not so much driving as it is being angry in a car,) Massive Attack will chill me out calm the homicidal road rage. At night, metal/hardcore seem appropriate and I'll go to In Flames, Darkest Hour, or The Acacia Strain to name a few. In snow or rain, black metal sets the mood nicely and I'll go for some old Gorgoroth or Darkthrone. Around town with the windows down, some upbeat punk like the Turbo ACs or old school rap like NWA fit the bill nicely.

I'm kind of weird with music, moods, and driving.

Been a long time since I've driven.

Zep's Kashmir was a favourite. Weekly night-drives from the Far East to the Far West of London.
Bill Nelson and BebopDeluxe, too and AHHH ... Jimi's Electric Ladyland - Gahhd - especially the long slow version of Voodoo Chile: Similar sense of inexorable progress as Kashmir.
They made all lights green and even sharp corners turned to drift.

I just spent about 8 hours driving. I didn't have time to make a mix, and most of my CDs are packed away.

Luckily, the rental car has XM radio. I switched between the 80s and 90s stations, one of the country stations (The Highway, I think?), and Classic Vinyl. I spent pretty much the whole eight hours singing to Benjen and car dancing

I dig 80s on 8, 90s on 9, and the cheesy Pop/Rap from the early 2000s... they just changed all my Sirius stations, so I'm lost again. And First Wave freaking rocks.

I usually copy over a bunch of stuff to my SD card and grab a audiobooks.

Today I was driving listening to "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder - loud, when all of a sudden the busy traffic infront of me all moved out of the way, 'unusual' I thought, as I was overtaken by an ambulance - with lights and sirens blazing.
