cat question
I have no clue where to post this so I chose here.
So.... my cat is being a total dick to our new puppies. A couple of years ago we took in a stray and he had a blast with him. He totally dislikes the puppies, though. I am use to giving pet advice, not receiving! Its really funny because he just randomly slaps the pups shitless but he is declawed.... i still feel bad for the pups. they play bow and roll over and do everything possible to entice him. he is totally not having it. any tips? |

How old are the pups? They are going to get bigger... the cat is not. I say they can fend for themselves and once they are bigger they will probably have some respect for the cat and not completely terrorize it.

Yep, and further, if the puppies are around longer than the cat, and you end up getting another cat down the road, you'll already have dogs trained to deal with cats. My 2 childhood cats bullied our puppy when he was first around. They eventually got used to him and stopped whacking him so much. After the cats passed on, my parents got 2 new cats a year or so later. The dog turned into a cat-nanny. He'd whine or go get my mom when they were doing something they weren't supposed to. While the kitties now live with us, the dog comes to visit them every so often, and he still has a great respect for cats.

He is establishing his role as Alpha Cat. Puppies are typically a little rougher and more playful than older dogs and a lot of cats have a more difficult time in the beginning dealing with that energy. If he's not biting and not hurting them, they'll work it out. Same thing happened with my old man (he's almost 13 now) and King Fausto of the Sixth Dimension (he's only 20 months old). Even though they're both cats, Isaac bitches and complains all the time when Faust wants to play. As a matter of fact, they just started their shit in front of the monitor and I had to shove them off. Cyn posted up a great article elsewhere awhile back about how people get kittens to "perk up" their older cats and how it's really like an old person dealing with a toddler. They can get aggravated. Regardless of the species, it's about the same issue.
They'll work it out as dominance gets established and the pups get over the "fun" of having a cat to torture... ahem, "play with".

3? More like five-times It's totally hilarious to watch puppies trying to get a handle on what that skinny, fuzzy, hissing thing is trying to say.

Wait, you willfully chose to let Dalmation/boxer puppies in your house??? You don't like your house much, do you.
