How do I know if I have a fast or slow metabolism?
For certain? I can guess, but is there an actual test or something? Actual health benefits or dangers? I hear people talk about it all the time but never a doctor actually say such a thing exists...
|
I assume what you're talking about is Basal Metabolic Rate. You could use one of the many calculators available online which would give you an estimate based on the population you're most similar to but would fail to tell you anything about you specifically relative to that population.
My understanding of the method to find your own is that involves fasting and then measuring your oxygen consumption while resting. This is rather laborious thing to have done just to satisfy your curiosity. Is there a particular reason you wanted to know? Also, I don't think there is any hard rule to say that you have a fast metabolism at X calories per hour. My best guess would be that at 1 standard deviation or more above the mean for your demographic it would be safe to say that you have a fast metabolism, but really, I just made that up and most people aren't going to understand what you mean by it. |
Basically if you can eat a lot of food(including junk food) and not get fat ever you have a fast metabolism and vice versa.

yeah knock back a couple of big mac, and a few crown lagers every day and evening.

Got me a huge tapeworm, so my metabolism is awesome right now.
... I have no idea how to measure my metabolism. I know I'm scrawny. I assume mine is close to normal if not a little on the high side. If you just eat healthy and stay active, your weight doesn't change much. Don't know why I can't seem to add much muscle mass. I've certainly been trying. ... Only time my metabolism changed was when I was off starving in the woods in the military. I lost like 8ish pounds and came back and gained like 15ish. Then went back to normal. I had a mini beer gut for like two months. It was brutal. I ran it off, though. ... Say, is that your training diet, Dlish? |
not quite, but on days that i train really hard, it is because i crave anything i can get my hands on. less the booze of course.

There are diet programs you can use to track your caloric intake alongside your weight that will roughly estimate your metabolic rate for you. I use one called DietPower. Calorie Counter Diet Software 100% Guaranteed... & FREE Food Diary.. They have a free two-week trial.
