Gag reflex

Don't get too excited - nothing sexual here.

For the past month or so, my gag reflex has been a pussy. If I start coughing or if there's something that makes me a little sick (like seeing dog poop) I gag and immediately want to throw up. I've had ok control over it until last night. I lost my dinner a few hours after I got home from the restaurant, just from coughing a little. The only thing that's changed recently has been some personal stress. But I can't imagine that taking a toll on my gag reflex. Ideas? Other than 'talk to your doctor?' :o This is super strange for me.

OK, now that my purient side has been satisfied, I sometimes have the same issue. As a matter of fact, it happened at dinner last night under the same circumstances you described: finished eating, started coughing and almost threw up. Generally that happens when I eat richer foods (which was most definitely the case last night) and get a tickle in the back of my throat. However, a big coughing fit can definitely make me do the technocolor yawn if it last long enough.

Personally, I'd say that these two things - the visual issues and the coughing issues -aren't necessarily related. They could be, but I personally think that it's a bit of a jump.

That's fucking awesome. I had never heard that before, I'm using that next time I'm drinking.

I have a huge problem with this woods. I can go into a throw up mode if I burp, hiccup, cough, or laugh to hard. I think it has something to do with acid reflux, but I'm not sure as I don't have insurance and I can't afford a doctor. Hell, if I brush my teeth the wrong way, I have thrown up in the sink before. People used to think I was a light weight cause I would throw up at random times during drinking sessions, but it was just drinking beer to fast and gagging myself. I learn to work around it, but it still sucks. I have no way to fix it, I just try to avoid doing anything that would cause me to throw up.

Plan9 10-30-2009 08:15 AM

Heh, Shatner. Oh, that woulda been so good. And it's Technicolor. "Technocolor" would be alternating black and Cyalume snaplight colors.

...

OP: Is it like this?

...

I'm similar in plumbing to The_Jazzarooney. I don't have issues with a prechewed exhale unless I'm really sick and have attempted to eat something that takes way more work for my digestive tract than Cheerios. I can't think of how the scent / visuals would get you alluvasudden.

snowy 10-30-2009 08:35 AM

I would say it definitely could be acid reflux. The same thing happens to me when my GERD is flaring up fierce, though thankfully that hasn't happened in a really long time.

And LordEden, if/when you can spare the cash for a course of Prevacid (as soon as it comes out OTC), you should give it a try. It won't hurt if you don't have GERD, but if you do, it can help any damage you've done to your stomach heal, which is typically what causes the long-term pain and sensitivity. While changing my diet and losing weight really helped with my chronic GERD, what finally got rid of the pain was a course of Prevacid.

I've got a good friend that swears by that stuff. It allows him to eat bar food like a dumpster.

It is the proton pump inhibitor that worked best for me.

For short term relief from GERD, I take Gaviscon. Works great, tastes like cupcakes.

For gagging, part of the natural response to a bad smell is to scrunch up your face; the reason for this is that smiling inhibits the gag reflex. If I feel nauseous and start gagging (rare, because my gag reflex is almost nonexistent,) a big cheek-lifting fake smile helps out until I can back away from whatever caused it.

I've had the same issues with toothbrushes since I was a kid. I have to be super careful.

Regarding visuals, I'm not so sure they're related either. But I dunno for sure. I've had a few gags today but nothing that eh... produced anything. I mean, when I threw up last night, I was sleeping - woke up with a tickle in my throat, started coughing then bam - I was racing to the bathroom with a mouthful.

9'er - I don't think that's the same thing. I really don't have a weak stomach. I wanted to be a mortician at a point and time so rarely does 'gross' get to me. I did mention the poop though. Can't handle being close to wet dog poop after a rain *shudder.*

Thank you for the replies :o.

Woods, you seriously crack me up. Poop??? HAHAHAHAHAH

I gag on toothbrushes as well. I can't really brush my tongue or I start retching. I did it last week and my wife was like GROSSS!
I've never actually barfed though. I have gagged on coughing too, like you said, but I had to be coughing like a fiend first.

lulu_mq 10-31-2009 12:52 AM

DON'T READ IF YOU HAVE A BAD GAG REFLEX:
Hell fucking yes! You can't tell me, that a pile of dog doo that was once dried and dark brown (not so bad) transformed to a re hydrated plump and beige mass, is not putrid ok? *aulkgh*
Ok, it's safe now:
I gagged a few times yesterday. Once this morning while making coffee. I don't get it. Very strange. But like I mentioned, there's some men-suck stress going on right now, so I guess it's possible that's all it is?

heeeeeeeyyyyyy....... the only other thing that's changed recently is that fake dope I've been smoking. Could it be some sort of side effect you think??

I also have a very strong gag reflex. Every time I change dentists, I have to make damn sure they're aware of it. Usually, they don't realize how serious it is until the first time I have to open wide, and then they get the idea. When I was 7 or 8, I had a dentist who refused to believe I had a gag reflex, and while working on me under the gas, I provided a reminder to the entire chair and room. His assistants weren't too happy with the cleanup, I'm sure.

Also, in high school, I had a girlfriend who washed her hair with vinegar for some damn reason. Every morning when I got to school, she'd walk up to me and the smell of vinegar would send my gag reflex into overdrive. She wasn't too pleased to watch me start urking as soon as she saw me each morning. A friend of ours covered for me and told her it was because I drank too much coffee in the morning, and I had to give up coffee while we dated. No girl is worth that.

wooÐs 11-04-2009 03:02 AM

Was in the hospital tonight. I'm fine, blah blah. Anyways they wanted me to drink something for my stomach. It was about 4oz. of it. Of course, it didn't make it down lol. I did learn though that even though I was surrounded by other sick people behind curtains and what not, there is just no way for me to gag and throw up quietly. And unlike sneezes, vomiting just cannot sound cute no matter what you try. Hmph.

I got this same problem. it's annoying.

biznatch 11-04-2009 03:17 PM

For any smokers, has this happened while you smoke? Sometimes you take a drag, and it hits you the wrong way?
It happens to me fairly frequently, though I don't have a problem with gagging in general.

spindles 11-04-2009 08:57 PM

put me down for a toothbrush gagger - never thrown up for it, but gone close. I've almost heaved on the dentist too - try to get a full mouth imprint and see how that feels - it's like your whole mouth is full - bleh!

biznatch 11-08-2009 06:24 PM

Gah, yesterday it got me. Had nothing in my stomach except for 2 giant cups of coffee, and when I had my first cigarette I had to throw up. First time a cigarette's done that to me.

That's totally happened to me, but now with cigarettes...:paranoid:

I love coffee, but I have to be really careful that I eat food alongside it at some point, otherwise the acidity gets to be too much for my poor stomach to handle. At that point, it's relatively easy for the tobacco to make me throw up.

Poppinjay 11-09-2009 08:05 AM

The gagging is your body rejecting the evil inside you. You must have swallowed a newt or killed a unicorn.

For some really cool looking poop, feed your dog some pumpkin pie filling. It aids their poop making for when they're constipated and forms a kind of brown/orange swirly poop. It also tends to be big and moist, so take extra baggies. Baggies for the poop.

wooÐs 11-09-2009 08:10 AM

*gag*

Shaindra 11-17-2009 04:11 PM

Last time that happened to me, I was pregnant.

wooÐs 11-17-2009 04:20 PM

It's happening a little more often now. It's gotta be nerves. I just have a lot of personal bs going on atm (no job, relationship issues, depression, blech, etc.) It happened to me twice today, the first time, losing my breakfast of pills. As mentioned in another thread, a doctor of mine went ahead and gave me a script for xanax to get me by for a little bit. We'll see if the gag incidents tone down.

Hmm, I was under a considerable amount of stress back in 2005 - early 2006 and I would puke at the drop of a hat. Didn't matter if my tummy was full or empty, what time of day it was, where i was, what was going on - i was puking 4-6 times a day. This went on for months until I finally found a dr. to help me and get me on some medications to reduce my feelings of anxiety. Nothing bad since then. And, happily, no longer on medication either. So it DEFINITELY can be stress-related.

wooÐs 11-30-2009 05:28 AM

Since the last post, I do still gag every so often - I'd say once every 2-3 days or so. But no throwing up w00t. So I'm thinking it is / was anxiety. Strange how our stress can affect our bodies.
