I need a job!
Hey guys,
I'm kind of at a cross roads in my life right now. I've been pursuing professional baseball for the past 4 years but to no avail. I'm thinking about giving it up and looking for a career type job. The only problem right now is that I don't really know what I want to do. I grew up eating, sleeping, and breathing baseball. I did go to college and do have a bachelor's degree in Multimedia. Ideally I'd like to get a job doing something in the realm of sports, such as a job at ESPN or FOX Sports or something of that nature. Although none of those seem to be a possibility right now, I've been doing some research about careers in different fields such as the video game industry, sports marketing, sales (ugh), graphic design, and other corporate type jobs. I did some graphic design and web work during my Multimedia courses at school, but I'm 3 years removed and I know the industry right now is ridiculously lucrative and very competitive. Not to say that I don't think I can learn but I think companies right now are looking for experience, of which I don't have much. I'm currently working at a telecommunications company installing copper and fiber cabling. I guess I'm just looking for some advice on which way to go or any other ideas/suggestions. I'm tired of my current job and hell I'm willing to work at best buy or somewhere of that nature to get out of where I'm working. It's not that I hate it but I'm only making $10. It was a filler job while I was pursuing baseball last year but now I'm looking for a real job. Thanks guys! |

I ran into your dilemma last year. I have a computer engineering degree - and like your degree in multimedia a lot of what I've learned became obsolete after spending four years in the Army. I looked at job sites and they all wanted experience (even the entry level ones!?!).
So I decided to go back to school for just one year and update my skill set. I studied photojournalism and new media and despite the abysmal state of newspapers these days, I still managed to land a job with one. Now I don't know if going back to school is an option for you, but definitely consider it. Even if for a semester, you'll be more mature and possibly more determined than a lot of your peers and you'll get a lot of out it. I went back at 28, and landed a job after a year whereas graduates from the same program couldn't find work. It's all attitude and persistence, aka "How bad do you want it?" Don't be afraid to follow your dreams. I know it sounds cliche, but I had to change careers three times before I finally realized that. Good luck.

Start applying to every job you see in the payscale you desire, no matter the field. When someone shows interest in your skills and wants to hire you for good money, don't turn them down - rather, take the job, keep it for a year, make friends, get good letters of reccomendation, and in the meantime work your way into the field you're really interested in through volunteering.
