glasses on the back of the t-shirt

what is the point of hanging your sunglasses on the back of your tshirt? along with the guy fieri sunglasses on the back of the head look, this is just something i fail to see the benefit of. and it looks kinda stupid to me (i can't talk about fashion though, i generally look like a homeless guy), and makes me want to take the glasses and run.

is there some reason or benefit that i just don't know about?

wooÐs 07-12-2009 07:06 AM

I'm thinking it's along the line of muscle shirts.

thingstodo 07-12-2009 07:13 AM

Why do people drape sweaters over their shoulders or tie them around their necks?

This one isn't even hard...it is better than hanging them on the front because you can bend over forwards without risking them falling on the ground. It is better than putting them on the front or back of your head because you don't get hair product on them.

What obvious superior alternate are you suggesting, that you consider this to be a fashion 'no'?

i was thinking maybe wearing them or carrying them in a case. how often are people bending forward that they have to worry about them falling or can't hold them in thier hands when they do bend over? i don't wear hair product, so it never occured to me that is actually a problem.

either because they are a 65 or more years old woman, or their name is "biff" or "chad, " they have a yacht, and they want someone to kick thier ass.

I'm neither 65 year old woman nor do I own a yacht and my name ain't "biff/chad", but I love rockin' the sweater over shoulders thing. It works for me.

This might be related but I do want to own a yacht some day so hey ....

As for the glasses thing, I really thing it's stupid to wear them anywhere else besides your eyes.

ratbastid 07-12-2009 10:56 AM

I think it's because people want to draw them like He-Man.

By the power of Grayskull.... I HAVE THE GLASSES!!!!!

Cynthetiq 07-12-2009 11:04 AM

I used to keep my custom made purple raybans on the back of my collar like that.

reasons:

didn't fall off top of my head/didn't fall out of shirt pocket - i had about 4 pairs of regular raybans chip or break from the short fall of bending over to pick something up.

didn't mess up my hair

i knew EXACTLY where my sunglasses were at all times, unlike the breast pocket if they fell out I wouldn't know about it until much later in the day. Just like my wallet in my back pocket, I know exactly where it is because I can feel it.

At the time, I couldn't keep a pair of sunglasses past 1 single season/year. After I put them on the back of my collar, I kept them for almost 11 years. How did I eventually lose that pair? Moving. They got packed up or lost in the move. I know that they weren't on my collar.

wooÐs 07-12-2009 11:09 AM

I do occasionally use my shades as a hair accessory. But that's as far as it goes.

CinnamonGirl 07-12-2009 11:28 AM

Yeah...I've never gotten this, either. Cyn and Twisted have shed a little light, but... sorry, guys, I still think it looks silly.

Then again, I regularly use my sunglasses as a headband when I'm inside. I don't have to worry about "product," though, and anyway, my sunglasses are of the cheap gas station variety.

Cynthetiq 07-12-2009 11:42 AM

I don't care if it looks silly. While my friends kept losing glasses after glasses, I still have mine.

LoganSnake 07-12-2009 12:00 PM

I've never seen it....

Always have mine on the front of my shirt. I'd be too paranoid to leave them out of my sight on my back. Too easy to have them stolen and mine aren't cheap.

pig 07-12-2009 12:31 PM

I still do this - I picked it up as a habit from hanging out at the beach and from my days playing soccer. The reason I developed this is that I frequently wore t-shirts (and still do) or a soccer jersey, and there frequently is no front pocket. I don't carry my sunglasses case all the time, and when I do have it with me (say in the car) I'm not going to carry it around in my pocket all day. Just like cyn, I've found that by developing the habit of sliding them behind my collar in the back, I always know where they are when I walk outside into the sun, and they aren't creating extra jumble in the front pocket. I usually have a bunch of pens and pencils up there (by the way, I'm looking for some pocket protectors, but no one carries them in stores any more...), and this also avoids a lot of scratching. It's easy and convenient.

Vigilante 07-12-2009 12:40 PM

If i wear glasses, it's usually safety glasses when I'm in the garage/shop or building something with power tools. In that case, I swap them around to the back of my head to keep them from falling when I bend over to cut something by hand or pick it up. I don't keep them on my face at all times because I don't wear glasses normally, so they bug me and sometimes fog up.

If I'm wearing sunglasses, it's usually when I'm driving. If I swap them to the back of my head, it's not for fashion but so I can see, like if I get out and walk in a building for a moment. If I'm out of the truck for more than a minute, they typically stay in the truck.

That said, people that wear glasses on the back of their shirt don't bother me. However one might be considered a douchebag for doing it. Same with the gay sweater thing and quite possibly owning a yacht. We don't do that down here, and we laugh at people that do. If you actually tied a sweater around your neck like some yale graduate or whatever group does that sort of thing, you'd probably get mugged and then jeered at by said muggers.

jewels 07-12-2009 02:49 PM

I clip mine to my shirt front and my cleavage holds an arm of my glasses in place, which keeps them from falling when I lean forward. Maybe those guys don't have enough cleavage for that.

A choker, a bracelet, a purse or a collar ... If it works for someone, who cares if the Fashion Police haven't yet outlawed the practice?

Charlatan 07-12-2009 04:40 PM

I can see the reasons for doing this, as outlined above, but just don't like the look. I have to carry my case with me all the time because my sunglasses are prescription. I carry the case because that way I have somewhere to put my glasses when I swap them for sunglasses. The case lives in my bag.

If I have to take them off to read something they get hooked to the front of my tshirt so I don't loose them (or sit on them).

As for the sweater thing, the whole point of the sweater on the shoulders is that it gives you somewhere to put your sweater when you aren't wearing it. You go out and it's hot. You go into a mall where it's cold and you need a sweater. Viola! You have one handy. I suppose you could also tie it around your waist but you'd look a little skate punk in doing so. I very rarely tie a sweater around my shoulders as I keep my sweater in my bag.

Willravel 07-12-2009 05:03 PM

They're not just glasses, they're rockets.

SabrinaFair 07-12-2009 05:43 PM

I wear mine on my head, personally. I'm much less likely to lose my head than my shirt.

Neither are exactly a polished look, but to each his/her own. Replacing sunglasses gets very expensive. (as I know all too well)

I think of the sweater around the neck as a northern thing. No one down here does it, seriously. Only place I've seen that done is on tv or in a movie from the 80's.

People do tie sweaters around the waist here though. It's common for girls of any social group to do this. Guys either wear or don't wear, but don't often take them off or put them on based on weather change. If it'll warm up later, you wear a jacket and leave it somewhere when it warms up, or simply go cold in the morning. Only the snobbiest of the snobs would actually wear that down here, seriously. I'm not trying to put anyone down, that's just how texans are.

If you wear your glasses on your back,
you can spot those lurking gay sweaters,
sneaking up behind you.

that is mind boggling, now why do some guys wear there pants below there ass, also confusing. I've even seen guys wearing belts do this, isn't the purpose of the belt to keep your pants from hanging down?:oogle:

Punk.of.Ages 07-12-2009 07:53 PM

Why does anybody really need a reason to do any of the things mentioned in this thread?

It's all just styles some enjoy rocking...

My question is why do these things bug others so much? Nobody's telling you to do it...

I see people in the south of France sporting the sweater over the shoulders thing, all the time. The weather shifts from sunny and warm to sunny and chilly quite quickly (it comes from living on the shores of the Mediterranean I suppose).

I don't see it as frequently here but I can tell you that most women have a shawl or pashmina tucked into their bags. Stepping out of equatorial heat into freezing malls is not pleasant. Hell, I wear a jacket at my desk all day because of the bloody freezing air conditioning. I carry a light sweater with me to the movies.

Chacun son gout.

Redlemon 07-13-2009 06:28 AM

I have never seen nor tried the "sunglasses on the back collar" thing, but after reading Cyn's reasoning, I'm willing to try it out.

It's a trend. It started among ex-cons to prove their street cred. When you're booked, they take your belt so you can't hang yourself. Because gang members had already adopted baggy pants as a way to conceal guns, drugs, and anything else they wouldn't want spotted easily, their pants would sag to between their hips and knees. When they got out of jail, they sagged their pants as a way of showing that they had done time. Naturally, younger and less experienced members of the social group, in this case the gangs, did it. Once a few rappers adopted the style, it spread to urban areas. Once Yo! MTV Raps awakened white suburban youth across the country to rap music, it became nearly universal among young men. Once a simple trend that anyone with pants can join in on starts, there's no stopping it.
