Need beard advice
What do you call a beard like this?
http://www.censusuk.co.uk/abberlin.jpg I have fair hair, so I dont know if it will suit me, but this is want I want to do next with my facial hair. Except I dont know the name of this style of beard... |
I'm not sure it makes a difference whether you've got fair or dark hair with that style of facial hair-- which if I recall right is a form of the Franz Josef, sometimes called "Friendly" Mutton Chops.
Speaking as a man with a beard-- a man who's worn facial hair for over 20 years-- I really can't say that the Franz Josef (or variants thereof) are particularly becoming on anyone. Is there a specific reason for this choice? Personally, I tend to favor a simple, short, full beard. But I have in the past sometimes gone for the door-knocker (sometimes called a circle beard, or a full goatee). Granted, I'm biased, but these choices are simple, low-maintenance, clean, and becoming on nearly anyone. But if you really want something just a tad less conventional, one of my good friends is fair-haired, and he wore pointy sideburns and a horseshoe mustache, which was a very becoming look on him. I might recommend something of the sort. |
The last few years I have on and off had a full beard or a goatee - I just feel like something different.
A full beard suits me (I think), but I feel like doing something that stands out a bit. |
I rather like the style, myself. I say go for it.

Over the past two years I've experimented quite a bit with my facial hair -- During my research I called the quoted style either "friendly" mutton chops (as Levite noted) or a hulihee. I tried this one out two weeks ago, but only kept it for about a week. I got very mixed reactions from my friends, some were very enthusiastic, but one person who visited me for a few days told me (jokingly?) that that surprise had ruined his trip.
For risk of giving strangers an unintentional "poor" impression, I went back to regular 'chops, which I enjoy quite a bit. Edit: It may be worth noting that I have dark brown hair, so you may garner different reactions -- I've never seen anyone/pictures of anyone with this style who had fair hair, and to be honest have a hard time visualizing it. Is fair like, "light brown," or "blonde?" My roommate last year had very light hair, and sometimes he'd complain of needing a shave, and I honestly couldn't see that there was anything TO shave. ("No shave November" was particularly humorous) |
My friend had this going on for a while. We made a number of jokes about his "thighticklers." If you can pull it off (and I think you can, SF), go for it.

Sucks, 'cause it's a pretty cool facestyle. |
i´d totally hit that guy
my advice on beards is to let someone else light the bbq :( ps i´m finding it funny that not only has a significant contribution to this thread been made by female board members ( i was expecting bard grooming tips) but also by a person who has an avatar with, well, 100% facial hair.... pps as for some serious advice here is the style you´re looking at (also check out the rest of the site as it has some awesome tips)friendly mutton chops |
Cool, that site has a lot of info - cheers.
I dont have blonde hair, but my beard normally grows kind of ginger. Attached pic: http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/phot...90938_4509.jpg |
I like the photo comparison. And yes, you definitely look better with the facial hair going on. The full beard is good.

It's also veddy veddy Brittish.

everyone here calls it the General Custer
I used to wear it for a while, but my wife (then girlfriend) made me get rid of it - she was extremely unattracted to it I think it's pretty badass, but it wouldn't work in my business setting, either :( |

try losing the 'stache and tidying up the lower end of the beard as per my markings on the upper one (approximate guide)
As a fellow big guy with a beard, I have to tell you that it's not about what it hides, it'e about what it hides without looking like it's there to hide it. |
poor quality pic, but so far I think it suiits me ok
