Low Prescription Glasses
I've only recently needed to get glasses and by needed I mean have any use for whatsoever. At my checkup I was told I had one step near-sightedness and the slightest astigmatism in my right. I was given a prescription with the doctor noting that I will probably only have to use my glasses while driving after dark. Well, I don't even drive, I take the subway and cabs where ever I go. However, I like my glasses. I think they look great on me and I've gotten nothing but compliments on my appearance with them on. A friend, who thinks I look better with them than without, though, has told me that if I wear them too often my eyes will get used to them and eventually my vision will worsen. This sounds like rubbish to me, but I have noticed that if I am in a large lecture hall and am trying to make out the details of my professors face it is noticeably blurrier than I recall it being before I started wearing my glasses. Is there anyway that it is actually true that I am weakening my vision by unnecessarily wearing my glasses or am I just falling prey to my own mind and only noticing this because of my friend's comment?

Wearing glasses will not make your eyesight worse.
Two things that can happen are, A) things SEEM worse when you take off the glasses because you're used to the enhanced vision, or B) Your eyes can lose the ability to focus as quickly without them, but this is a temporary condition, and will return to normal after a short period of time without using the glasses. This was a concern of mine that came up, and those were the answers I received from a sports optometrist who specialized in prescriptions for competitive shooters. |
