I'm being raped, help (USBank)
1 Attachment(s)
I started with a balance of 54 and some change.
at worst they could charge me one overdraft fee yet they have five listed there. I'm gonna go down on my lunch and try and get this straightened out because being almost 200$ overdrawn is pretty bunk when it was by a dollar. any idea who to talk to or what to say? |
I overdrafted with Key Bank for a dollar once. By the time they let me know, I owed them $100.00.
I got pissed, said fuck it, and racked up $200.00 more via the internet. Not recommended, as now, in order to start an account for my LLC, I have to pay it all back. I'm good at doing dumb things so the people that know me can know what the consequences are! |
I know that most banks will waive the fee once or twice as long as you're courteous and in decent enough standing with them.
But I've always found it best to withdraw all of the cash from the account if the balance is lower than $100. Between the banks hidden fees, atm charges and convenience fees it's too easy to overspend. |
you have to find out what the 5 overdrafts are for, if they are for 5 different things, then you've racked up 5 different instances of NSF fees.
do you have outstanding checks? this lead me to stop writing my own checks and use their billpay service. my services with the bank were free, no service charges because I had direct deposit with them. With billpay online they take the money out of your account and put it into a general fund account and pay with a check from there. If the check isn't cashed in 6 months, they credit your account. |
I don't write checks. and I have no pending charges, so this whole thing stinks.

Dear Shauk,
Sorry you are fucked. I hope they have the courtesy not to put sand in the lube when they slip it in, but they might decide to after all. Maybe they won't make you wear the gimp mask. Love, The_Jazz |
re-reading it, you use a visa debit card, so those are equal to check charges, which you can see from the last two charges.
but the first 3 charges, doesn't look like there is anything. |
From what you posted, it would appear to me, that when the do the figuring at the end of the day, they count your service charges first. So, if you overdraw, they take out the overdraft fee, then the money, thus causing more overdrafts than you would have otherwise had. Works out nice for them, but smarts in the rear a bit for you.
//edit: And it would appear that they're charging you an overdraft fee each day you have a negative balance. My bank does something like this where they put a hold on large out of state purchases (say over the internet). But when they do your balance at the end of the day they do all the withdrawals followed by all the deposits. So, if you order something for $400 when you have only $600 in your account, they put a hold on $400 at the time of purchase leaving you with $200 then at the end of the day they take out $400 to pay the bill (putting your account at -$200 and creating an overdraft charge) then credit you back your $400 they had put a hold on. Usually they catch and fix it themselves but sometimes they don't so you have to keep an eye out for it. |
k i just got back and they refunded 4 of them.
apparently there was some "phantom" pending charges that neither the seattle branch or the Idaho branch could figure out (they were on a call while I sat at the desk patiently) They base the charges on the "pending" charges. so if I have a phantom 65$ charge pending to my account, and then I spend, and post 45$ (as I did) they look at me as going from -20ish to - 60ish the pending charge had removed itself today, oddly enough, but never posted. I walked in with my laptop displaying exactly what I posted here and they printed out what they had in their records. Very different since as I said, they work off pending numbers, which is scary, i'll be a little more careful in the future due to this for sure. yay for 3 deposits tomorrow though. frickin aye, 10 more hours and I'll be ok. I was basically like "wow you guys are telling me I owe you 165$ when from my round about math, I went over my balance by about 2$? this kinda hurts, I mean I understand banks are all about money but... wow, I gotta live |
US Bank is known as a fee-income based bank, they do try to charge you for everything. I work for a midwest bank, and they pretty much all work the same. If you make a deposit, its not available to pay the items clearing the account today because they have uncollected funds. So they take your pending item and uncollected funds out, then take out what is clearing to maximize overdrafts aka fee income. Best advice is know how the system works and keep a register.

good god! I'm glad that they fixed it. Sucks that they put stress on you, but glad it's resolved and not your fault.
|
Shauk, I use US Bank for my business account. I caught them red handed posting checks before deposits of the same business day. They reversed their charges when they were confronted. Watch those bastards. I'm looking for a new banking relationship, and perhaps you should too.

I've yet to find an honest bank.
I like the convienience of using my card as well, and I have several auto withdrawals set up that I wouldn't even know how to get ahold of them to update the information anyway (like my student loan for example) so i feel kinda stuck. Changing banks is always a huge huge huge hassle to me. |

Don't you get any statements in the mail? There's information on them. See if your employer has a deal with any banks. Some will give you free services because you direct deposit with them as the preferred bank from your employer. Lots of banks like this setup because they don't ever really "lose" the money to another bank. It just gets moved internally from one account to another. |
There are instances where when you buy gas, or some other purchases, banks will automatically hold a lump of money when it is approved. Say you get approved at the pump. The bank grabs $50, 100, $200, whatever, and they hold it until the actual bill is finalized, which can take a day or two with them. Of course, this gives them an interest-free cash pool to float on.

Never really caused any issue for me. I just noticed one day while looking at my account on-line that all my checks hit and then the deposits hit. Went back and looked at over two months of data. Sure enough everyday there was a deposit it was posted after the days checks cleared. I figured if they were doing this to me they'd also be doing it to my 18yrs old daughter who just started an account. After calling them and them claiming ignorance it suddenly stop. How odd. |
