New on the dating scene, I have come across an interesting statistic - an inordinate amount of men that I have met (60%) grew up in NYC, lived extended periods of time in the Bay Area, are involved with book arts in some way, have good incomes or trusts funds, and are wild anarchists. I'm not sure what to make of it.

Vitriol-spewing monster daddy: Relax, settle down. I know this is a frivolous weirdness. I haven't dated all these individual, independent hipsters, just met them and have usually declined to date them. What is interesting to me (a pretty normal Midwest kind of girl) is that such a high percentage are similar in their geography and life lessons/circumstances. What's with that?

Baraka: Yes, I learned my lesson after Intellectual Martyr. However, there is something about these same boys, a commonality...they are generally very, very smart, very bookish. They pull me right in, and I have to remember to rein in that giddyness. I'm actually on the lookout for it now, kind of a red flag. (I mentioned in another post how my instincts are all gunked up right now. I've had to resort to this red-flag business. It's embarrassing, really. Who knew this would happen? I've almost always been a girl who used her head.) Say, Baraka, in looking at your pic you're not one of those bookish men who lives not far from NYC, who is involved with book arts of some sort, are you?!

Sure, they're smart, but anarchism is a great political philosophy for people who think they are smarter than they really are, and who can't understand the real implications of their political philosophy. Trust me, I used to be one. It's perfectly logical for trust fund kids to be drawn to a system that has no laws because they grow up never being told "no" and get mad when they grow up and the real world starts saying it. Suddenly, societal expectations and laws get in the way of what they want to do and they don't like it. It's a short hop over the line from ideologically pure libertarianism, which is a perfect philosophy for those who were born on third base and think they hit a triple.

You know I work with psychologists all day long, and the fact that I just left a man I was married to who was bookish, etc, has not been lost on me. I'm not that far gone. Still, it is fairly easy for me to slide right back into that trap.

There are two things that come up for me again and again: 1) One of the things I grew to hate in my marriage was the pretension. It occurred to my one day that I just could not stand it anymore and it was one of the deciding factors in my leaving. Now I find that I too have some pretensions, and I am ashamed. I'm learning.

2) I love dating and have been exceptionally lucky in picks. I have learned from each man, and I think each of them enjoyed me to some extent. I feel more adult, and like I have adult choices to make. It's rather silly and childish, and fun. Who knew?!

MSD: My thoughts re anarchism and libertarianism are similar to yours. I am much more logical and try to live in the real world as it is.

I have met people like this throughout my life. However to meet such a large percentage and all through dating is disconcerting. It makes me wonder sometimes what goals these boys might attain if they put their resources to use.

I'm an unemployed, bookish recovering alcoholic. I have two degrees. I've lived in a few different cities. I wouldn't call my self an anarchist but I do agree with pointless rioting and violence. I'm a professional chef. No trust fund but when I actually have a job I make a shit load of money.

They aren't all idiots, some people realize that they are being controlled by others and choose not to like it. Some people would rather not work for someone else and make them rich off other people's work. Maybe if society accepted them, they might have higher self-esteem...

I'm not saying that I agree 100% with where society would go if anarchists were in charge, or what a relationship would be like with one. But they do have some good points to have a more interesting way to live life.

I mean the only time in the past year when I've felt really alive an happy was when I was on vacation in the Outback, the bottom of the Grand Canyon and the Canadian Rockies. All very far away from the normal rules and other people, sure, but also far away from the monotony of daily life working (even though I need to work to be able to travel). It was refreshing to be back in nature and have to use basic survival skills.
