I went to Thailand several years ago during Christmas. It was also winter in Thailand since it's the same hemisphere but the temperature was like 90 degrees. First we went to Bangkok for like 5 days. We were absolutely amazed at the places we went to. The temples are incredibly gorgeous, it was just overwhelming. The shopping was awesome, bargaining with Thai people is so much fun. Also we didn't really eat any of that food that they cook outside, we were kinda scared. Another thing you have to know is to always bargain with the salespeople on the streets (not in the department stores). Let's say that he names a price of 100 buts (money), you say 50, and so on until the final price is like 70. Actually I would recommend getting tours of Bangkok, I think it would be very hard to see all the interesting places, like multiple temples and the red lamp street (street covered with strip clubs and people selling cheap clothing) on your own. Buy lots of souveniers, they are very cheap and some of them are really beatiful. Also after that we went to Pataya a small city by the Ocean. The main thing we did there is just going to the beach, but it was still great. We used small buses, called tucks, for transportation. Also for New Years the hotel threw a huge party, with lots of food and entertainment and we went swimming in the ocean that night, it was that warm. I think that this time of year it's probably really really hot there. I'm sorry for randomness of different thoughts, but maybe you can make some use of this post.

Thailand has some of the best prices for Men's clothing. When I was there in 1989 I bought a whole new wardrobe for myself for very little money.
By all means see the giant buddha temples, the floating market, the klongs (canals) and eat the food. Have some Thai Dynamite and some Singha beer. If you can get to Chenmai it's a beautiful area where there are artisans making many sterling silver jewelry and other hand crafted items. I know you are going with your wife, but prostitutes are not allowed in the hotel rooms, it's very frowned upon to bring them back to your room. go to the largest thai restaurant in Bangkok. Yummy food delivered hot to your table by people on rollerskates.

I was in thailand in 97, and it was really something. Hot is definitely the word. Beautiful, the people were great, and there are some great shopping deals to be had. I was there with the air force, and saw some of the best and worst, but it was still awesome.

Bangkok is an amazing city, but, traffic issues make it hard to get around. You might consider a smaller city such as Chiang Mai.
Also, Sukothai for the Full Moon Festival of Loi Krathong in November is an event that you will never forget. |
