American Express VS Alaska Airlines
So I have an AK AIR visa credit card that i only use for miles, but I have the $75 annual fee. I have a big limit on it, and have had it for years.
Now I have seen that AMEX has the blue sky card where I get miles also, and its ALWAYS 2 miles per dollar spent. This is the ONLY reason that I use it for. not for points but for miles. my family loves to travel and they have ak air credit card, but I figured since they all have the same card, if I got something different (AMEX) then we can benefit from amex also. I am looking for everyones opinions on what is the best credit card for me to use. What I like to do is pay all my charges on my card, and then at the end of the month I write one big check to pay it off. no balance carry over. also is there a way to have the credit cards compete? Like call AMEX and tell them to give me some cool stuff, like: bonus miles, low apr, or free something? Then I will go with them? NOSOUP: are you out there? =) I did see the thread about "first credit cards" that didnt really help me much. thanks, Ramiro |

Go with Amex gold card. Relatively small annual fee but you must pay it off every month, no interest charges. Automatic life insurance each time you charge an airline ticket to the card of $250K, availability of special seatings and advance show and concert tickets and most of all kick ass service when you're in trouble or need something.
They don't have to compete for your business because they offer a lot more than the other guys. I worked there years ago and still use nothing else. https://www143.americanexpress.com/c...ARDS/144/1/0/0 |

If I go with AMEX, are miles the same as Points?
like one point equals a mile? the sky miles one looks enticing, but has annual fee. the blue sky is free and gives you points for miles. the main thing I dont really want is that annual fee. I mean I already pay for one. just something new that i wanted to try out to change the way i bill pay and benefit from it. |

Check out their site to compare cards, or call 'em up. I haven't worked there for years and don't want to sell it to you.
BTW, if you pay an annual fee for a card and cancel it, any company will refund the prorated fee at time of cancellation. |

i am just really wondering if there were some hidden things that I should know about before signing up. about how points are about 10 per mile or something like that. or annual fee free first yr then next year will be $100. stuff like that.
or if anyone prefers one over the other. Thanks |

All amex cards have an annual fee -the gold is a higher than the green, but some of the benefits are a little better (if you use them o therwise then they aren't worth it
American express occassionally has promotions where you can get xx amount of points for every dollar spent at particular stores... but it's rare they'd do it for every purchase. the plus side to amex - is that thier points can be converted to miles at most of the major carriers... or go directly to the airline... (hotel loyalty programs do the same thing)

My only reason for keeping my AK card is the annual free companion fare. It was useful when we were vacationing out of the country each year. I bought one first class and got a second first class free.
AmX may have something similar, or the mile awards cause the similar options.

If the $75 is worth it for the miles you get, go for it. I personally use the Marriott card because I get all sorts of point bonuses for being a Marriott Rewards member for so long. I only pay $30/year and regularly use $2,000 worth or more of rooms with points per year. That $30 is a great investment for me.
