Headache remedies

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have developed the mother of all headaches. I know what caused it and have done my best to remedy the situation, but to no avail.

I took 30mg codeine phosphate about an hour ago, no effect.

Anybody know any good ways to cure headaches caused by dehydration (aside from drinking lots of water)?

Water, yeah - rest is a biggie. Sometimes, a good nap shakes you out of it. When I'm having a bad one (non migraine)... I get a neck massage, whether I con Q into doing it, a friend, or even going to a nail salon and paying for it (here you can get 10 min, 23 min, whatever you want, makes it easier to pay for). Because when you start having pain, you get tense. And the tension causes more pain. And then you get more tense.... you get my drift. It's important to break the cycle.

So!
1. Take the most appropriate drugs you can. (I love my migraine meds, they help me... oh, I don't know, LIVE.)
2. Get neck rub. Once it starts, you'll feel the trigger points if you don't already.
3. Nap for at least an hour, hopefully two.

I hope you're feeling better by the time you get this!

Excedrin works best for me. I usually take the "migraine" formulation, which has yet to shake loose a headache.

I don't take anything for headaches unless the pain is so dehabilitating it prevents me from doing normal tasks - standing, sitting, etc.

When I do take drugs like tylenol, etc.. I take it with a can of soda. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor like acetaminophen, so it helps to relieve the pressure against my skull that typically causes the headache. You have to be careful, though, because caffeine is also a diuretic, and can worsen a headache if not followed with water.

I can cure just about any headache I get in 15 minutes of sitting still with my eyes closed and minor pressure on my temples from one or both hands. If that fails, I take a tylenol with a soda, followed by 2 glasses of water and another 5 minutes on my temples. I've yet to have a headache not defeated by this strategy.

EDIT: I should note that although my mother's headaches are much more severe, she can usually defeat them in a similar manner. It seems from anecdotal experience that headaches and their ability to be stopped with biofeedback is somewhat genetic. What do (or did) your parents do to stop headaches? It's likely that the same would work for you.

excedrin is a great headache remedy because it's got caffeine it it - you might want to try a shot of caffeine to help shake loose the headache...

an icepack works for me, if the pain isn't sinus related.

massaging the base of my neck also.

Hope you feel better soon.

The problem with drugs is that 1) a lot of them are ineffective for me and 2) I can't take the ones that might actually be effective. Excedrin, for example, contains ASA, which I'm not able to use. As bad as the headache was, I'll take it over hemorrhaging any day.

The strongest painkiller I have available to me is the codeine. I did note that it didn't have any effect but admittedly left out that I didn't really expect it to; the only reason I took it at all was because the pain in my head was bad enough that standing up was difficult and passing out would be bad; I live alone, after all.

It's passed now, but there is a possibility that I'll face another one in the future, so having tips for dealing with them is probably a good one. LoganSnake's answer seems a bit drastic in retrospect, but at the time I might've actually considered it; for the future I'll remember the neck rub thing and see if that helps.

Thank you all for kind words and advice.

A cup of herbal tea.
A quiet candle lit room.
Soft music.
A soothing bubble bath.
About six hookers and a bag of cocaine.

The last one is optional.
