Raw Food

Take a look at the trailer for this new film about raw food.
It's a documentary about six people, who normally eat fast food, who decide to go 100% raw for a month. It features interviews with doctors, experts, and raw foodists including Gabriel Cousens, David Wolfe, and Woody Harrelson.

The trailer on Youtube at:

Looks good, on the whole. It really should say rawVEGANfor30days though. Why not have some raw eggs and meat included?

I do especially agree with the point regarding how in general we as a society are much more inclined to pop pills than eat more broccoli.

One of the guys associated with this film is David Wolfe, who is a well-known raw food vegan. There are health issues with raw foods when it comes to dairy, eggs, and meat, so they are generally left out. I think a purely raw food diet is too restrictive, but there certainly are benefits to certain raw foods.

Thats like saying turkey bacon isn't bad.

Sushi > vegan anything

And on a serious note, vegans have to make sure they are eating things like omega-3 fatty acids (and they can't get long chain omega-3's).

Sushi is the best of all worlds, healthy, and tasty. I get the rolls a lot so I get a good dose of veggies as well.

Ustwo, most (Western) meat eaters don't get nearly as many omega-3 acids as would be beneficial (i.e. EHA, DHA). And most get too many omega-6s. There are a few lucky vegans who can convert ALA to long-chain fatty acids. Though, they are few and far between.

And, newtx, don't get me started on the Atkins diet.

Women are not invited to this conversation, most don't even understand the the joy that is a rare steak, how can they fathom the depth and perfection that is sushi?

Impossible I say.

Random Raw Food shit:
Quote:
Raw Food: Healthier than Cooked?

Dear EarthTalk: Are raw foods healthier to eat than cooked foods?
-- Kris Amitzboll, Coledale, Australia

Proponents of raw foods, sometimes called “living foods,” believe that raw foods are much healthier for the body than cooked or processed foods. Followers of diets based wholly or largely on raw foods claim numerous health benefits, including increased energy levels, clearer skin, better digestion, weight loss and reduced risk of heart disease.

A purely raw food diet, as its name implies, is based on consuming only unprocessed, usually organic, whole plant-based foods, such as fresh (or dried) fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, beans, grains and legumes, other organic or natural foods which have not been processed, and freshly made fruit and vegetable juices.

According to the Living and Raw Foods website, raw, uncooked foods are believed to contain essential food enzymes which help the digestion process without relying on the body to produce the enzymes that are lost through cooking. It is also thought that cooking (heating foods above 116 degrees Fahrenheit) destroys vitamins and minerals and that cooked foods take longer to digest and tend to allow partially digested fats, proteins and carbohydrates to clog up our digestive system and arteries. In Living Cuisine, The Art and Spirit of Raw Food (available from best-cooking-books.com), raw food chef-to-the-stars Renee Loux Underkoffler argues, “Raw foods make optimal assimilation of nutrition easy, provide pure, clean energy for the body, and do not require a lot of energy for digestion.”

Traditional nutrition experts refute this idea, though the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and others are doing studies regarding the possible benefits of a raw food diet. Claudia Gonzalez, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the ADA says that eating all raw, all the time, is an “extreme” diet, but acknowledges, “If you eat more raw foods in your diet (without adding calories) that’s always a good thing. Replacing refined, processed foods with raw foods is a healthy move. Eating a few raw meals a week can be great, but it’s important not to go to the extreme.”

Gonzalez, who has studied raw food diets, says it’s hard to eat more than 1,200 calories a day in raw foods. While this might be great for weight-loss, she says, once the weight comes off, that might not be enough to sustain a person’s energy, especially if they are doing physically demanding work.

If you decide to go raw, there are benefits to the environment as well. The lower you eat on the food chain, the less impact you will have on the Earth’s resources. According to certified nutritionist and raw foods advocate Monica Dewart, “100 percent of the waste materials (seeds, peels, etc) of a raw diet are biodegradable and great for composting. This is the ultimate environmentally-friendly diet!”
If I could only stand 1200 calories a day I would starve in a week. Oh-HELLS-nawh. In the words of Jeff Bishop: I need fud in my fud-hole.

Uhh... so driving a Prius and being a Raw Food a-hole make you a super hippie.

...

UsTwo,

But raw bacon isn't crunchy and delicious. It also doesn't cover fifteen city blocks in a magical meat odor that reduces the male populace to pacified, drooling babies.

This super-hippie-rich-and-bored-wearing-hemp-clothes-where's-my-Prius raw food diet is probably too healthy for controversy despite it missing a huge chunk of human/food systems evolution. Some foods are actually more healthy for you when cooked.

Jesus, cooking is something humans developed for a reason. And that reason is pizza!

Ustwo, I must be one of those few women who enjoys a rare steak. Yum.

My first thought when I think of raw food is: Oooh, steak tartare! Beef carpaccio! Tuna carpaccio! How many ways can I make carpaccio? I'm sure I'd find out quickly if I went on a raw food diet.

Give me meat.

Break out the beer-can chicken. So much for raw food.

But, seriously, if we as North Americans knew more about food and nutrition, or if we actually cared, the average diet would include more of the typical raw food things you see. Salads, sprouts, seeds, nuts, raw veggies. Most people stop at a side of french fries and a leaf of iceburg lettuce for the burger.

Why? Why can't I eat it all? I don't discriminate on food. I'm eating it all! You see me eating it all? Oh-YEAH!

Oh, and one more point:

Americans don't know shit about diet, but either does anyone else.

The Chinese are eating species to extinction thinking they will cure diseases and make their penises hard.

The Japanese have lower heart disease and higher rates of stomach cancer and can't survive without whale meat.

The Germans eat a lot of things with their sausage.

The scotts think a mars bar is best deep fried.

The English not only eat shitty tasting food, they eat shitty tasting fatty food.

The French think that stuffing a live goose until it almost explodes and eating its liver is the highest of cuisine.

The Ethiopians, well I don't know what they think but man their food is awful.

The Mexicans..... mmmm well I don't have a lot of bad things to say about mexican food, but it does get a tad monotonous.

But anyways bad dietary habits seem to be a universal. Americans are fat bastards, but right now Europe is blimping up too, and I expect the trend to spread to nations as wealth expands.

And while a beet sounds disgusting I have had fried eggs on a burger, and I'm ashamed to say it was quite nice.
