Kitty!
I don't know if this is the place to post it but I just got a new kitty yesterday and she is too cute to not share her with others! I am moving into a new house in a few days and they allow cats so me and my fiancee decided to go around looking at the animal shelters and as soon as I walked in I saw this little girl and we had an instant connection. She is 8 months old and I picked her up yesterday after she got fixed. I thought she would be tired and maybe in pain when I picked her up because of the surgery but she is super spunky and mischevious.
I had a couple of questions, I like my animals to sleep in my bed but last night she decided to crawl on my face rather than lay down so I was wondering if anyone knew of ways to try and train her to maybe not do that as much (cats are quite stubborn, though). Also, does anybody know of any automatic feeders that are worth it? I know of a few but they all have bad reviews saying that they have either gotten clogged or the electronic feeder just didn't work and their cat went without food for days! I might be travelling a little bit in a few months and, even though I will have people check in on her daily, it would be nice to have an automatic feeder for when she is alone. Now, without further ado, I introduce Bella (short for Bellatrix, ya I'm a Harry Potter nerd). I will post more pictures once I find a good image host. I don't know if photobucket is good, does anyone have any suggestions?

the dry food feeders are pretty good -basically you dump the food in, and it keeps the cat's bowl full.
I have seen a few for wet food, that you can put up to 5 days worth of food in 5 compartments and on a timer, it will open the compartment... but i wouldn't want to leave the cat alone for that long. fi you've got someone coming in every day the dry food should be enough. best method of training cats I've seen are the water pistol method... though having her sleep on your bed, might send mixed messages to her - why is the bed ok to be on butother furniture isn't.... (cats shed, you might not want her on all yourother furniture.) besides, cats are fairly nocturnal - they tend to not sleep when you do...

What a sweetheart. And props to you for rescuing her from a shelter. As for feeding, I don't use an automatic feeder. I am my cats automatic feeder. But I do use a Drinkwell water fountain. The cats love it.
I use photobucket, and I have never had a problem. Everybody has different experiences.

First thing that popped into my head was "wow if that's a kitten you must have REALLY small feet"
As for automatic feeders - well the closest thing we have to that is a simple ice cream bucket filled with dry food for them, we fill it up when the two gutzes empty it. Training wise a water pistol is great - if you want her to learn fast add a tiny bit of white wine vinegar into the water - the smell and the taste makes the lesson stick but that might be a bit cruel for you (I always feel vaguely guilty after myself)

Cat walks on my face when I'm in bed.
I pick her up and drop her off the bed. She quickly gets the message to stop messing around... Or I hiss..... As for automatic feeders... Get good neighbours, they're more reliable than an automated product. Cheaper too. |

i leave my kitty's food out, the dry stuff anyway, but i've learned to keep it up off the floor on a cookie-cooling rack. hooray for ants. and i only give him wet food at night. one little can. otherwise he gets piggy. the water bottle thing used to work but sometimes he decides that it is fun. like at 7 am on a sunday. and i have to chase him down the stairs. makes me not happy. enjoy your new kitty!

My cat goes to sleep between us, but if he wakes up during the night he quickly makes his way to my pillow and nuzzles my neck. If my neck isnt available(as in covered by sheets) he proceeds to sit on my face until i cant breathe, wherein I wake and he quickly dives for the neck. He is young and I am hoping he will grow out of it. Its the only time we hear him purr too!

Okay, as an update, Bella is sick. On Friday morning I noticed that she wasn't being playful and that she was sneezing a bit. Throughout the day she was just lying around anywhere there was sunlight and curling into a little ball. So I took her to the vet and they said (which I thought it was) was that it was an upper respiratory virus more than likely. They gave her a shot to bring her temperature down and amoxicillin to help prevent bacterial infection. They said that it was probably because of her having a compromised immune system from her surgery. Well, it's Monday morning and she is still sneezing just as bad and not wanting to do anything. I know it's probably the equivalent of a human cold but it's really sad to see her just lying around when last week she was so playful.

My cats have been through this several times. It is especially difficult for the little ones. The sneezes seem to rack their entire little bodies. After about 4 days she will start to get better, and after a week to ten days she will be back to her old self. Until then make her a nest in a warm place where she can curl up and be alone. These upper respiratory infections are very frustrating.

Listen to Grancey! But do keep an eye on her, and make sure she's getting better. Some kitties like cuddles when they're miserable, others want to be left alone. You'll figure out what kind she is fast.

this is my kitty Daisy - she's not too bright but rather cute and affectionate. Currently lying on my lap and nuzzling my hands making it VERY hard to type.

I mean Cromp that she has managed some truly stupid things - such as getting her head and both front legs caught inside a watering can also she got trapped with both paws braced against the walls of the toilet bowl while trying to drink out of there. She also drools when she's happy and when people won't pat her nuzzles inanimate objects (her favourites atm are my dads flip flops and the bag of lawn fertilizer).

Thanks for your concern, and sorry I didn't respond earlier, I just moved to a new house and we still don't have internet (using a friend's now). Bella is doing great! She has completely gotten over being sick and is having a ton of fun in the house. Too much fun, I believe! I need to figure out a way to hopefully train her to use her scratching post instead of everything else in the house. She just stares at her scratching post absentmindedly as she is scratching the couch. She is eating like crazy as well which is great because she is super skinny. I also bought her a Drinkwell Fountain and she loves it, thanks, Grancey! I got more pictures but I will post them when I get my internet up and running. Should I be feeding her dry food or wet food now as a young cat? I have been giving her both but she kind of just stares at me when I give her dry food. Also, Hyacinthe, Daisy is a definite cutey!

Dry means less stinky and messy poo, and you can just leave it out for her. Wet is also bad for her teeth! Plus, dry food is so much cheaper... even the expensive stuff is cheaper.
I'm so glad to hear that she's feeling better! My little guy just got over a cold too. Nothing more pathetic than kitty sneezing fits. But he's feeling much better now. Yay for kitties! /is a complete moron for cute animals

Glad to hear Bella is back to being happy. I have five cats, and they all eat dry food. But mine are rather spoiled, so if one demanded moist food he/she would probably get it. The scratching post is an issue for me as well. One of mine loves the scratching post, but the others won't go near it. They prefer the corrugated cardboard scratching mats (approx. 11x14) that lay on the floor. I've bought them at Wal-mart and Petco/Petsmart. I was dubious the first time I bought one thinking my spoiled babies would never prefer cardboard over carpet or sisal. I was wrong. They loved it and actually competed to be the one who ended up sleeping on it. It is that popular. To get Bella to use the scratching post, try using a cat toy. Have her chase the toy near the post and then pull it up the post to get her to grab it. That will get her into the groove of digging her nails into the scratching post. If she likes it, she may start doing it on her own. If not, you can always designate one piece of furniture for her to sleep on and scratch. Mine prefer rough material with a lot of texture. I found an ottoman with wheels so they can run and jump on it and it slides a little. They sleep on it, they scratch it, and since it's just for them I really don't care. It keeps them from scratching on other furniture, for the most part...... Also, I take mine to my vet periodically for nail trims which is a free service. This helps alleviate some of the scratching.

Awww, so cute. I love kitties. Especially black ones. I have a black kitty with a bit of white on his chest and toes. His name is Mistoffelees. We might be getting another cat soon, not sure. But I feed my cat dry food, I keep it up on a table that is just for him since our dog loves cat food. Now my only problem is keeping the cat out of the dog food.
We haven't had the scratching problem yet but I do have a scratchy post that hangs from our closet door knob. Also I have one of the automatic water things, so handy. The dog even likes it over his water bowl. But I feed them all myself, it's a routine in the morning, feed cat, dog, fish, scoop cat box, take litter and dog out, make sure everyone has water, get ready to go. More pictures would be great. Not sure if I can find our digital camera, if so I'll take some of my kitty. Best of luck in your new house with your kitty though.

What a great kitty! And perfect for Halloween. Seems like young animals are such a time commitment. Props to you for giving it so much TLC!

For the scratching post, you can try sprinkling it with a bit of catnip. That worked for me. And for trimming the claws, you can actually save yourself the vet fees and do that at home. I trim my cat's claws myself with a pair of regular nail clippers (you can get special ones for the purpose, but the normal ones work just fine). Just be careful when you're cutting not to hit the quick; it's the pinkish part in the middle of the nail and is actually analogous to your finger tip physiologically, so lopping a bit of it off will not make for a happy kitty.
