Protein and complex carbohydrates (whole grains, brown rice, steel-cut oats) will stay with you longer and lots of fluid (sometimes we mistake dehydration for hunger).
I usually try to eat more cleanly - no processed food, no dairy, no refined sugar - cuz the junky stuff just makes me feel crappier when I'm ill. If you swear by chix soup, do it from scratch - it's fast and good. Hope you both feel better soon... EDIT... sometimes you need to eat a bit of fat to get that full and satisfied feeling... maybe oatmeal with a side of bacon? mmmm bacon. I also feel fuller from oatmeal if I whack in some peanut butter. Must be the fat!

drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, make you pee alot and pee out the germs, and help keep you full.
pretty much what xxxafterglow said, when you eat, each meal should contain protein, carbs, and fat. if you are missing one of them, you tend to get hungry quicker. milk and hard cheeses are good for keeping full as well. i hope you both get better soon.

mmmmm...bacon....
I have the flu too-or a really kickass cold. But feeling like I'm wearin a horse's head on my shoulders while the body feels like I fell off a bike at 70mph, I'm leaning toward flu(plus fever and doing nothing but sleep all day and coughing up organs). I get stomach-growling starving but the idea of food turns me off. My friend brought over some chicken noodle soup. I had maybe 5-10 spoonfuls and put it away. Tonight, while manning our gallery opening, I was starving again, so ate some fruit. Within two hours, sickenly hungry again, so we stopped at McD's. It's been an hour....hungry again... Food +being sick=sucks. |

I'm always the opposite when I get the flu...no appetite at all.
I have noticed in general though...when I don't have protein with a meal, I get hungry a lot faster than if I have protein. I hope you both feel better soon!

Protein digests much more slowly then carbohydrates so high protein meals should keep you full longer - adding protein to a meal also slows down the processing of the carbohydrates in that meal.
Perosnally I am like Medusa, I can never bring myself to eat much more then tomato soup or a few pieces of toast when I'm ill.

chili with some low-fat cheese sprinkled in.
healthy request beef and barley soup... add a grilled cheese if you need it. split pea and ham soup is good, too. grits with cheese. hit up eating well which has some kick-ass comfort food recipes that aren't too unhealthy but very filling. the turkey pot pie is fantastic... we ate it three days this week.

I eat lots of macaroni and cheese (Kraft dinner) and microwave bean burritos when I'm super-hungry/sick because they're easy to eat/swallow and filling.

Hey Shani, hope you're taking meds ... I find good old Actifed pretty great for the congestion / nose leak / coughing combo and it doesn't make me dopey like Nyquil. Take it with food (if you're not on other meds and feel like trying it) - an oldy, but a goody.
And make sure to down tons of fluids, even if you're sleeping thru most of the day. It'll thin the mucous and make it easier to cough up in the morning (gross, but true). Sounds like stews and soups might feel best for your throat (and you can make a big effing batch, too). I really like to eat Pho when I'm feeling under the weather: Chix, Jalapeno, Cilantro, Lime, green onion, fish sauce, ginger, star anise, mint and basil Boil/drain rice noodles separately, whack in bowl, pour soup on top. It's good even w/out the noodles and has so much flavor that I can taste it despite my head cold (same goes for Tom Kha). If you make a batch of noodles, you can drain it and store it ziplocked in your fridge - they'll soften up when you add hot soup to them again. Asian mom curative soup recipe: Pork ribs and cabbage (bok choy) with salt and pepper to season. Really simple and pretty effective, imho. Hot broth, tons of protein, and the rich nutrients of cabbage. My mom swears by this. EDIT for anise - I knew I was missing something - thanks, Owl.
