Tilted Life Success Cutoff
When have I "done a good job" with my life? Oh, I figure after I have kids and they have kids... I can finally write off the whole genetic success thing as a "GO" and pick a fight with a grizzly bear while wearing a robe made of ribeye steak and a Butterball turkey helmet.
A list of things to do, perhaps... or maybe just a philosophy to accepting an endstate. At what point in your life will you be okay with "clocking out"? |
Any day now.
|
I don't know why, but that makes me sad.
I was always taught that our hearts should be clenched fists... holding on to each moment as it comes and goes, awaiting the next one in the chain. |
i'm quite ready to clock out at any moment, doesn't mean i am gonna seek it out. i guess it depends on what you mean by clocking out. i enjoy riding my bike, looking at porn, cooking, playing chess. i'm never NOT gonna do those things. i will do those things as long as my body and mind allow me. i'm not gonna take any precautions and worry if i die, if a doctor told me i had 3 days to live i would rejoice and let out a huge sigh of relief that it's gonna finally be over, but just cause i wanna die doesn't mean i'm not gonna live each day as i feel like it.
does that make sense? do you know what i am trying to say? as far as doing a good job with your life, that is up to you. don't hold your life up against anyone else, don't listen to anyone else's ideas of "sucsess" they are all irrelevant. the ONLY thing that matters is if you look at your life and are happy with how it is. if not, do what will make you happy, but it comes from inside, not from what others, media, parents, me, anyone else says. |
this is going to turn into a conversation about "living" vs "waiting to die"
:p |
I am beginning to live
|
Oh, it's not that I'm not living it up while I've got the chance.
But I think acceptance of the possibility of death makes every moment sweeter. |

... I suppose I wanted more of a "it is okay for me to clock out now because of I've finally done... x, y, z" in a list form or a philosophical sense. Itemized. Tangible. Superficial, maybe. Wanted to see if their was a pattern in it. ... I challenge anybody who says they're okay with clocking out at any old time because they apparently have nothing to live for, they're a basketcase, or just plain lying. What is your motivation to be alive if you're truly okay with dying in five minutes? Where is the primal scream of, "I'm not done yet." "Do not go quietly into that good night," and all that jive sucka talk. You appreciate life more when other people try to take it away from you for little or no reason, when you realize that the only limitations you have in life are those of the scientific boundaries that hold the universe together. I figure the more you travel, the less you feel like dying. So much to see, so much to learn. Mmm, I wouldn't give that up. Not without a fight. You only get one shot. Quote:

I dont want to die, but Im not afraid of death. When its my time to go, its my time to go......I will rejoice over the things I've done and not lament the things I didnt
Unless of course I havent been to Scotland...then Im gonna be pissed lol |

I s'pose if the reaper walked up and told me to get my bags packed, we're leaving in 5 minutes that I'd look back and say that I've lead a good life. The things I've done/accomplished and how I've carried myself I am pleased with.
Other than being completely financially self sufficient, and being able to follow my OWN nose everyday to see where it leads, I can't think of any aspirations on a grand scale that I definitely want to achieve before I go, but I'm sure that I'll figger out some cool things as I go along. More of a "it'd be cool if I did X" kinda thing. More of a spontaneous want than a desire. |
Any time works for me. Year ago would have been ideal, but you can't always go on a high note, so, whenever.
|
I'll be happy when I've seen every professional new york sports team win a championship. So far the Knicks and Jets are the only ones keeping me alive.
|
A year ago I would have said I was perfectly ok with "clocking-out" any day, because I was perfectly satisfied with myself (I still had hopes and dreams, but I was perfectly happy with who I was).
Today, I'm not ok with "clocking-out", because I have a little me who will need to be looked after. |
You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave...
Although I accept that I can die at any moment, I've made no plans regarding such an eventuality. I live every day like I'm going to be alive all day, day after day. No sense in worrying about something I can't control.. something that ultimately has no influence on my day-to-day behavior. I'm hoping to make it to 40. When I'm 40, maybe I'll change that goal. |
When my SO catches up to me and surprises me with a ring, live our lives, travel, have fun, have kids, send them off to college, they get married, have kids, and then I'll be good.
|
If we're talking about long-term life goals, I'll be truly satisfied when:
--I've eaten my way through Asia. --I've eaten my way through France. --I've backpacked around New Zealand. --I've camped across Canada. --I've written about all of these experiences. --I've had a family and established a working hobby farm. |
My list is close to onesnowyowl's.
I went camping and hiking in the Candian Rockies in July. I would like to do it again. I went backpacking in Australia in April. (Not quite New Zealand, but I will get there someday) I want to ride my bike (and eat) along the Medditeranian Coast in Spain, France, and Italy. I want to travel to Antaritica. I want to see Japan and Mongolia. I would like to build a eco-friendly, off the grid house. And I want to have a relationship with a girl that loves me. |
* Travel to every country on earth
* Speak at least five languages fluently So yeah, I'm never gonna be okay with clocking out, given those standards. :D |
Wow, LOTS of things I need to do before wearing the meat suit and going 10 rounds with a Kodiak. Most are selfish, but several involve offspring.
BTW to Crompsin: That's the coolest way I have ever heard to 'check out' volintarily. Did you come up with that on yer own? |
I want to live to see my children grow into adults. I want to see them be happy with who they are and where they are in life.
Although, I do not have a list of things I want to do before it's my time, I am still, and forever will be, learning about myself and those around me. Each day is a new day. I am not ready to "check out" yet. |
